This time its REAL....

I just got a call - I start on Monday. Its a security/concierge job in a high rise way on the west side of Manhattan. The guy said welcome to the team. He was reluctant to hire me - over qualified - when I went in for the interview last week. I guess I convinced him The pay is not so great but FINALLY its a paycheck. No benefits but thanks to the ACA I should qualify for Medicaid. I'm actually feeling giddy. Its a night shift 12-8 but I DON'T CARE its a job -after 2 very long years.

I sent my resume to a place just this morning for an assistant manager's job in Media Production for a school here in New York. It is a great job - and NOT just the money although that part is amazing. It would be so cool to get the call for that one BUT I'm just glad I got something for now.

There's a company in Toronto that is just like the one I used to work for - a media monitoring company. I thought about sending them my resume but I don't know how difficult that would be if they actually were to hire me. I'm going to send it anyway just for the hell of it - I figure why not right.

A couple of months ago I had to cash out an IRA - the LAST of my old 401k money. Now I will only have to use about $400 a month to make up the short fall from what I'll be making on this job. Starting in January I think I'm going to set up on 500px and try to sell some of my photographs. I probably won't make a whole lot from it but the satisfaction of knowing people might like my stuff well enough to buy it would be nice.

There's perks - it's peaceful at night, less traffic, less noise, you got that sleep vibe out and about, the stars and moon are up, and you always, always, get to see the sun rise. As someone else who once spent two+ years without a job, I know how good it feels to finally get that chance. It's an uphill battle - right now, I don't have any benefits either, with my job as a desk clerk at a hotel. Thanks to the ACA though, I should be able to get health insurance too - once they get the kinks out of the program.

The paycheck helps, but, in my opinion - it does not help as much as the return of hope, confidence, and pride. One day (provided we don't nuke ourselves into oblivion and aren't wiped out by global warming) I firmly believe our society will become so advanced technologically and socially that "work" as it is commonly considered and accepted now, will become a thing of the past, due largely to robotics and processes that make just about everything automatic. Imagine a world in which no one had to spend 8, 10, 12 or more hours a day in a cubicle just to survive. Imagine a world in which the very thought of that was appalling. Imagine if we could, instead, spend our lives with our families, imagine how much we could improve our educational system, our food distribution system, so many things will become better in the years to come, it's almost unimaginable.

That time isn't here yet though. What gets me through my days, isn't so much the job itself, or the necessary paycheck (though it helps!) but the people that I come into contact with every day. The people who change my life for the better and make the world I'm living in just a little brighter every time I see them.

Good luck with your job and with your journey. Just keep in mind that no matter what happens, it is not the job, nor the money that ultimately defines you or makes you worthy of respect, kindness, and decency. It is who you are. And from what I've seen, I'd say you're a pretty awesome person. That alone, is worth more than the best job in the world.
