Texas Republicans Find A Way To Disenfranchise Women Voters

They’ve targeted Blacks, Latinos and college students. Now Texas has come up with a Voter ID law that will disproportionately affect women – the constituency they most fear will support Wendy Davis.

Women are Wendy Davis’ natural base. Her eleven-hour filibuster of an abortion bill that closed family planning clinics in Texas is the reason she has the name recognition and the political capital to make a run for governor. Anti-choice groups who have never before had to spend money opposing a pro-choice candidate are scrambling to form political action groups to run ads against her. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, the man who is most likely to be her opponent, has been touting himself as the real pro-woman candidate for his success at collecting back child support from deadbeat dads. Now, Republicans have found what they hope will be a more reliable plan than trying to persuade women that Republicans have their best interest at heart:

Don’t let women vote.

Think Progress reports that as of November 5, Texans must show a photo ID with their up-to-date legal name. It sounds like such a small thing, but according to the Brennan Center for Justice, only 66% of voting age women have ready access to a photo document that will attest to proof of citizenship. This is largely because young women have not updated their documents with their married names, a circumstance that doesn’t affect male voters in any significant way. Suddenly 34% of women voters are scrambling for an acceptable ID, while 99% of men are home free.

... appointment by gerrymandered legislatures.

This, as well as massive corruption, was the reason for the 17th amendment in the first place.

Republicans also want to change presidential elector selection to reflect voting BY GERRYMANDERED Congressional districts.

And they want to selectively change the big swing states that have been voting Democratic in presidential elections (like Pennsylvania, which has been voting Democratic in presidential elections, and overall for House seats, but which has overwhelming Republican dominance in the House because of gerrymandered districts), to a system where presidential electors are apportioned by Congressional District rather than winner take all popular vote (while retaining winner take all in reliably red states).

The bottom line is that you are correct. The GOP knows it cannot win without corrupting the democratic process, so that's what they are dedoicated to doing.

They are un-American crooks hich must be labeled as such, shamed, and marginalized.

I used to work the elections, glad I am not now.

I have talked to some friends who still work the elections and men might even be effected.

I was told this.

If your voter card does not match your drivers license it will be up to the poll workers if you can vote.

I will check again tomorrow and get more information.

I did work at a very busy early voting location, the lines were long.

If the poll workers have to decide if each voter is legal to vote it will be a nightmare.

It might be better to vote early, not on election day.

Fuck these republicans, can't win so they cheat.

For example if you name is William, but you go my the name of Bill.

I will find out more information.

walk her down the aisle. Nothing about ownership to the whole deal. It's more about who the important male in one's life is.

She added her husband's name to hers. I wouldn't even do that - I have made my professional name with my birth name. I'd never change it. It's an expensive hassle and just confuses people.

But, ideally it should be just as easy for the husband to take his wife's last name if he wants to. It is much more difficult to do that, I have heard. I heard about a couple when the man wanted to change his last name to his match his wife's, but he ran into0 a lot of time consuming difficulties.

more than a little annoyed...so was her husband. They all got over it and all was fine shortly. More women should do it...they'll get over it and you will never have any identity problems.
Just think...old friends will be able to find you on Facebook. LOL

Seriously...other states will probably adapt this measure by 2014 and certainly by 2016.
So all you young ladies...Don't change your name if you want to be sure to vote in the future.
Or at least get on the ball and do it long before the next election.

It is a giant pain to change all that.

I mean, the blame here is certainly on the Republicans, but changing your name is patriarchal nonsense anyway. It certainly shouldn't be expected.
