FreedomWorks CEO: Shutdown, Debt Crisis Were 'Brilliant Republican Strategy'

Forget the overwhelming consensus that the government shutdown and debt crisis both amounted to a political pratfall for Republicans. According to the leader of a leading tea party organization, the GOP actually displayed its brilliance throughout the debacle.

FreedomWorks CEO Matt Kibbe shared an article with his Twitter followers on Saturday that he suggested should vindicate humbled Republicans.

The article, published by the website Marginal Revolution, posits that "Republicans convinced some of their opponents that they are crazy and irresponsible, without actually being crazy (though they were irresponsible, but that is the whole point)."

"Look where we stand," Tyler Cowen, the author of the piece, wrote. "In real terms government spending has been falling. Sequestration appears to be permanent, or it will be negotiated away by Republicans in return for preferred changes in tax and spending policy. Leading Democratic intellectuals are talking about future fiscal bargains with no new taxes. The American public polls as increasingly conservative."

He has a point that the GOP has succeeded in making the sequestration cuts permanent (unless the GOP is purged in 2014, and even then I am not sure the Dems have the balls to get rid of it), but it was not through any brilliant scheming, any more than Obama's handling was grand scheming.

Obama looked at the polls and saw that the smart move was to hang tough. The GOP look at the polls and saw ponies with rainbows. There are advantages to living in reality.

That alone, the unpredictability, made it stupid on its face. They did not care who they hurt or for how long, long as they fulfilled their radical political agenda.

Now that the very richest Americans are paying more taxes thanks to the expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts, which the Republicans fought tooth and nail for four years, revenue is increased and the need for additional revenue is reduced.

The sequester, which takes a trillion dollars out of the defense budget over ten years, was put into place because Democrats know that Republicans cannot do math, and would be unable to find an alternative to the President's proposed sequester. They failed to find one.

Government spending has been falling because no Republican Senator or Member of the House has received a new favorable earmark in four and a half years. It has been helped by the ending of the interminable war in Iraq--which W. could not end. No Republican-authored bills of any significance have been passed into law in that entire time.

So yeah, thanks a lot GOP. Your incompetence and unwillingness to compromise has allowed us to do this in spite of your continuous, virulent, hateful opposition. Keep it up.
