Guards posted to protect Banksy work in NYC

AP foreign, Saturday October 19 2013

NEW YORK (AP) - A Brooklyn building owner has hired security guards and installed a metal gate to protect a work by the elusive British graffiti artist Banksy.

The New York Post reports that the rolling gate went up Friday over the wall in Williamsburg where Banksy spray-painted two geishas and a bonsai tree.

Cara Tabachnick, whose family owns the building, said the goal is to preserve the artwork "so it can be viewed and enjoyed."

Most of the Banksy works that have gone up have been tagged over by others, and some have been completely erased.

He seems to have many groupies and following that could likely provide a healthy income. Perhaps he is already independently wealthy or has plenty of disposal income as it is?

...he does "traditional" works on canvas which are shown in gallery spaces, just like "real" artists.

They sell for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Here are some youtube clips from Banksy's 2006 Los Angeles exhibition, which I was lucky enough to see:

I guess he just likes the adventure of the tagging side of things. Sounds like he can afford legal rep if he gets caught.

On edit:

If you are really interested in Banksy and street art in general, have a look at the Banksy documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. The film was a Best Documentary Feature nominee at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011.
