Remember the threads after Candidate Obama won the general election in 2008?

Things like... and I paraphrase...

"Did we just see the END of the Republican Party?"
"Is the Republican Party imploding?"
"Will the Republican Party disappear after this?"
"OMG the Republican Party is DONE FOR!"

Multiply those quotes by a thousand different ways in a thousand different posts.

I bring this up because in this euphoric frenzy of rush limbaugh threads that has gripped GD for the last two days I see the exact same thing: I see the expectation that rush limbaugh will recede into the shadows like the rat he is, and disappear.

Not happening. Not happening. Not happening. I hate to break hearts, but it's not going to happen.

Yes, he's lost a dozen or more sponsors. Yes, the world is angry at him. I should say the world that doesn't include his most ardent listeners seems angry at him. His most ardent listeners aren't going anywhere though, and his most ardent listeners reside on both sides of the aisle. He's still an advertiser's dream. Any ad person with his or her salt will pursue the time the dozen advertisers gave up, but at a better price.

DU's euphoria sometimes becomes a wave that crests over the reef of reality. rush has TWO audiences. On the one hand, he has his sycophants who believe every word that comes out of his mouth, and on the other hand, there are those who hate him and listen every day just to hear what hateful things come out of his mouth so they can run to their blogs and put those words out there for those who DIDN'T hear them. Those blog readers will likely listen tomorrow in order to hear that shit for themselves, thus driving up his ratings.

Know what? I'd bet my BOTTOM DOLLAR that his listenership has risen in the last week. Strange how the world of radio works.

limbaugh isn't going anywhere. Listening to his program isn't going to be a commercial free exercise any time soon. He'll still have the same number of commercial minutes per hour as he always has, IF ad people are worth their salt.

I've advocated numerous times on DU for limbaugh to be ignored. Now, DU is obsessed with limbaugh, and more DU'ers will listen to him tomorrow than did a week ago.

Way to go.

I am here because people like Rush and his ilk drove me here. I was a moderate, I am quickly becoming a flaming liberal (whatever that means) the more batshitinsane the righties go the more left I go, funny how that works. The right is driving moderates away, they are quickly working on driving staunch conservatives away, if things keep trending this way they will get about 28% of the vote in the general election, their die hard base that agrees that women should just sit down and shut up while the men decide what is in their best interest for their reproductive health.

his listenership has surely risen, and DU has surely helped that rise due to an obsession with slowing down to look at train wrecks.

You can celebrate him getting his ass handed to him by a dozen advertisers but the reality is that there are hundreds of companies who are waiting in the wings hoping to get a slot on his program due to the number of his listeners.

You're not going to get him off the radio or satellite, and I'd wager your next star against mine that more DU'ers are listening to his show tomorrow than did a week ago.

I didn't say it was a GOOD thing, I said it was the reality.

Is it true?

Come on, you must know.

Or? limbaugh is done.

Which is it? limbaugh's done, or someone's in denial?

Will you or anyone you know be listening to his show tomorrow?

The euphoria over the Limbaugh is out of hand. We (especially here on DU) should be focused on the next step and electing progressive democrat's and avoiding any and every Rush conversation. We have work to do. An ass has been made of the entire GOP because, let them do the rest of the damage while we keep calm and carry on.

the efforts to neuter him helps to fulfill what you just wrote. It opens the opportunity to gain in down-ticket races with smart, reasoned plans for moving the country forward, without all the hyperbole and vitriol of the talk radio-addled GOP that drowns out the progressive message. Since liberals and progressives control very little of the airwaves (I think Bill Prsss has indicated that out of something like 2000 talk stations, only 60 have progressive programming), then shutting down the loudest of them is prudent.

Democrats and women in general, have historically been projected as "weak". A strong stand on principles of fairness and fighting prejudice and bigotry helps to muffle future nonsensical attacks - at least for this election cycle.

No other President has had to endure the breakdown in societal manners as this one, where Congressman feel empowered to yell out in the middle of a SOTU or federal judges feel empowered to send racist "jokes" using government email.

The most well-known and longest-lasting promoter of this type of juvenile and disrespectful discourse is this man.
