Please help a senior member of DU who is in need...

Last edited Mon Oct 21, 2013, 04:57 PM - Edit history (1)

rbrnmw is a very senior member on DU.

Her Profile : http://www.democraticunderground.com/~rbrnmw

She just posted this thread : http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=3894797

She is having a divorce soon and her husband is just giving her vague answers as a reason for divorce.

I was curious and i saw her older post.

She has 4 kids, she has just lost her both parents in march and july this year. She was denied SSDI (Social security disability insurance) 10 days back and she might even lose her home now.

Here are the things :

1) Her post on 5th oct asking if govt is still processing ssdi (as govt was shutdown during that time)..She has also written in the post that "If I don't get approved for SSDI soon I won't be able to stay here" (assuming she was talking about her house or not staying on DU due to not paying bills example : internet, electricity etc)

2) Her post on 11th Oct where she is telling that her SSDI was denied : http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023824430

Many people told her to someone. She said she could visit grief counselor but doesn't have money to fill up the gas.

3) And she posted today that her husband is leaving during his hard time. (Even in the same year both her parents died)

4) Look at this thread : http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251330824

She has been lifelong democrat and has been helping the party since 1976. (she was just 7 year old at that time) That's over 37 Years!!!!!
She has been serving this country and this party for about 85% of her lifetime. It's time we pay her back for what she has done for this country/party since last 37 Years.

To rbrnmw,
You are a brave woman. We are sorry for your parent's loss. You have to live for your 4 kids and their future. Don't think about what's happening with your relationship with your husband. Concentrate on your kids and on other good things in your life. Also there are many people here on DU which you can count as your family. We are deeply thankful for your service to democratic party and we hope you will continue to do so.

To All Users,

Here is the list of things we can do :

1) If rbrnmw agrees, we can do a wishadoo listing or something like that which can help her financially during this tough time. (She told in one of her post that she cannot afford to fill up gas in her car to visit her grief counselor).

EDIT : Here is her wishadoo link : http://www.wishadoo.org/wishlist/203/need-help-for-me-and-my-children/
(Thanks @onegrassroot)..PLEASE DONATE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN..

2) If you know where rbrnmw lives and if you happen to live in that city or a state or anywhere nearby, Please visit her personally. She would really like to talk to a person.
EDIT : SHE LIVES IN RURAL OHIO. SO IF YOU LIVE IN OHIO OR NEARBY STATES (PENN, INDIANA, MICHIGAN, NY, WV, KENTUCKY ETC), CONTACT HER AND ASK IF SHE WOULD LIKE TO MEET YOU.

3) If you are a Disability lawyer / Know a lawyer / Hire a lawyer for her, it would be great for her. She will get a real help if she can win her SSDI Case.

If you have any other ideas, Please post here.

I had read that thread and it made me sick to my stomach. I honestly couldn't imagine going through that much so quickly. Makes my current problems seem utterly insignificant. The Wishadoo thing sounds like a great idea. Don't have much to contribute, but I'd happily throw in a few bucks.

It's one of the links in the lastest OP I created.

Your post is wonderful. I'll send her a private message; perhaps you can as well. Hopefully someone who can help in some way will see this thoughtful OP.

Her real name is on that wishadoo post.

It doesn't take much for the stalkers to make trouble in the real world. They are cruel and have no boundaries.

My experience on SSDI ... there are experts, preferably and not necessarily lawyers, who do this for a living. They know all the players and what needs to be done. In my case, the State Unemployment officer I had gave me his name and high recommendations. Maybe I was lucky.

Some will do it pro bono, then share one-fourth, up to one-third of the receipts. It is beyond worth it. The good ones won't take your case if they don't think they can win it for you...and them. That's the good and the bad news.

The system is truly rigged so that the individual can not succeed. You will be denied 2 maybe 3 times, yet sill are accruing benefits, but only if you win. The final approval is to appear in person before a judge. It's daunting and having a professional who has both yours and their interests at heart is a win-win.

Good luck. You can PM me if you'd like.

7. Hey Joel

I am new, too, So welcome from another newbie. I just replied to rbrnmw on her most recent thread about how my husband applied for SDDI and hired a lawyer on contingency. Like another poster said, they will not take your case if they don't think they can win it. But unfortunately it sounds like rbrnmw needs immediate help. I saw her Wishadoo link and I will give something. Can't give much because my husband and I only have Social Security, but I will give something. Bumping this so maybe someone else will know if there are social services she might tap.

This was done originally, last year, and nothing was available. Even though it seems unlikely that, a year later -- especially in Ohio -- something in the realm of resources may now be available, it's worth a shot. I've written the DUer in question to suggest she do so if she can spare 15 minutes. Regardless, I'm going to try to do the same for her tomorrow.

Welcome, btw.

She had a daughter with Asperger syndrome, plus 3 other kids, back in the 1950s when she had few career options, and her husband just up and left for no apparent reason other than to enjoy life... people can be unbelievable.

She will not have to pay until she wins her case, and then it is a percentage of back pay awarded (I think it's 30%). If she does not win she pays nothing. She should apply now because the bad news is it will take months to get a hearing.
