Speaking at daily Mass last Thursday, Pope Francis warned Christians against turning their faith into a rigid ideology.
The faith passes, so to speak, through a distiller and becomes ideology, he said, according to Radio Vatican. And ideology does not beckon (people). In ideologies there is not Jesus: in his tenderness, his love, his meekness. And ideologies are rigid, always. Of every sign: rigid.
And when a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus, he is a disciple of this attitude of thought For this reason Jesus said to them: You have taken away the key of knowledge. The knowledge of Jesus is transformed into an ideological and also moralistic knowledge, because these close the door with many requirements.
The faith becomes ideology and ideology frightens, ideology chases away the people, distances, distances the people and distances of the Church of the people, Francis added. But it is a serious illness, this of ideological Christians. It is an illness, but it is not new, eh?
And then there's Brother Pat:

Robertson predicts Nazis and guillotines because of atheists rejecting God
By David Edwards

Televangelist Pat Robertson started the week off by predicting that Europe could be returning to the days of Nazis and guillotines because of humanists, atheists and other liberals who reject God.
During a Monday report about a bill in Belgium that would expand the countrys euthanasia law to terminally-ill children, Robertson said that the Nazi Germany spirit of death still existed in Europe today.
You know the liberals, the so called socialists, the progressives, theyve moved away from God and when you move away from God then you say, were humanists, he explained. Then as a result of humanity and rejecting God, you have the orgy of the French Revolution, you have the guillotine cutting off the heads of thousands of people.
You have the same thing going on now in Europe, Robertson added. You had it under the Nazis.

(3,596 posts)and not just because I am a Lutheran but I am learning to admire this new pope.
Whether or not you are a Christian, Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Mormon, Hindu, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist or even atheist, it would be difficult to argue with the beliefs that this pope not only speaks but lives.
He actually believes in humility and is concerned about poverty and war. He lives a simple life and submits himself to others.
Rigid ideology whether in religion or politics is deadly. We saw this recently with the government shutdown and near default of U.S. debt where the teabaggers are so beholden to their ideology they seized up the very machinery of our government and nearly our economy.
The same is true in religion. If you narrowly and rigidly espouse an ideology, there is no real room for faith or acceptance or humility, etc. There is only arrogance that your ideology is right and theirs is wrong. This is one problem I have with Islam. The Koran is fairly clear about "infidels". Whether you believe the Korean calls for a jihad against infidels where all those that do not convert are to be killed or not is up to you. But just as under the Spanish Inquisition, the catholic church forced jews and muslims to convert or be killed or exiled, Islam seems to suggest the same fate, either literally or figuratively.

(45,319 posts)In Argentina the man who is now Pope got famous by attacking gay people. He called adoption by gay parents 'child abuse' in spite of his own organization's guilt in horrific actual child abuse. He said that gay couples represent 'an attack on God' and that marriage equality is an idea from Satan.
Those who cheer for him might as well cheer for Pat. Same thing.

(19,964 posts)It never ceases to amaze me that on a supposedly progressive forum the leader of one the world's largest misogynistic and homophobic organizations routinely finds a cheering section. It's insulting. Fuck that!

(45,319 posts)It drips of contempt for their neighbors and of course is against the SOP of GD but the rules don't count for the 'faith community' only for others.

(11,804 posts)But I think it clearly divides DUers to no good effect - obviously it offends you and presumably others to read about how great the Pope is. It's divisive and accomplishes nothing.
It's how I feel when I read a post about religious people are gullible morons in GD. It's divisive without benefit.

(11,804 posts)The posts telling us how great the Pope has have been pretty constant. You haven't noticed them?

(19,705 posts)Its just funny that people think the Pope is so great!

(11,804 posts)And has more to do with who preceded him, I would say.

(19,964 posts)It used to be daily threads on LBN. Now it's GD. The PR machine just keeps moving from forum to forum until the complaints mount up. Obviously there are some folks around who think we really are that dumb.

(37,161 posts)From a post of mine back in January:
The date on it is 2 Jan 1991, so just over 22 years ago. At the time it was halfway through Poppy Bush's presidency, 5 months after Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait, and a little over 2 weeks before "Operation Desert Storm" (i.e., while military assets were still being moved into place).
Pat "special link" Robertson's predictions and comments:
-low interest rates, prime rate to 7%, stocks plummet
-by September, vibrant stock market out on a limb
-Bush reelected
-collapse in '93
-God is holding off disaster so that evangelicals can get the job done
-people of God support CBN (Robertson's cable network-JHB), high increase in donations
-if we leave Saddam, we must garrison Saudi Arabia indefinitely. Must attack Saddam or he will ___(must have dropped the word that followed-JHB). We Are Americans and must act like Americans, not back down to some tin pot dictator
Considering the lack of opposition from the then-nearly-collapsing Soviets, the short war wasn't all that tough to predict, though I think he had in mind weeks not the "100 hour war" that resulted (as long as you don't count our presence in Iraq for the next 10 years). I haven't looked up how the interest rates, prime rate, and stock market fared. I think his "special link" glitched on the '92 election, and gee, somehow we didn't collapse in '93. As for the rest, the only rational response is to point at him and laugh one's fool head off.
