Getting Back to the 2014 Mid-Term Elections

Now that the Republicans have further besmirched the name of their party and soiled their own britches, it's time to return to thinking about 2014. The GOP has given us even more ammunition than we had before, and the potential for regaining control over the House, is even stronger today. In addition, this should carry through to state legislative elections, as well. So, here's some things we can do individually, from within our own local and district Democratic organizations:

1. Encourage Great Candidates to Run - Understandably, some potential Democratic candidates are reluctant to run for seats they don't believe they can win. That's politics. However, the smelly stuff on the boots of the GOP has changed the outlook in many Congressional districts and state legislative districts. Encourage good candidates to put their names forward. There is still time. Think about potential candidates in your districts and get in touch with them to offer your encouragement and help.

2. Spread the Word about Bad GOP Incumbents - Did the Republican in your district attempt to keep government closed and to default on the national debt? Tell people about it. Talk to local PACs and encourage them to run informational "Tell Your Congress Member" ads, pointing out the incumbent's NO vote and telling him to please not do that. Those ads are effective, legal, and don't require an opposing candidate to be in the race yet. If there's no local PAC, maybe consider starting one, just for this purpose. Those ads can run right now, and well into 2014, and will help build awareness and resentment against the current Republican incumbent.

3. Go to Party Meetings and Get Vocal - Right now party, organization meetings are small and have low attendance. Take part in them, and start building the kind of intense dedication to winning that is so essential during the primary and general election season next year. Speak up, speak out, and speak often. No meetings scheduled? Lobby for some to be scheduled. Encourage action.

4. Start Your Own Media Campaign - Write letters to the editor, call radio talk shows, and make the point that new leadership is needed in your districts. Call out the Republican incumbent for his or her NO votes on specific issues, and point out that his or her obstructionism accomplishes nothing. Take your time. Write excellent letters and scripts for your call-ins. Keep them brief, to the point, and as powerful as possible.

5. Build a Team of Like-Minded People - Think about people you know in your own districts and get in touch with them. Brainstorm. Encourage them to take the steps above, too. Create buzz and build energy.

Those are some of the things I'm thinking about right now, and I'm already starting in on those activities in my own districts. 2014 is an opportunity we should not let pass us by, and right now is a great time to get started. We don't have to wait until candidates have declared or until the primaries are over. It's time to start, now!

Yes! I'd prefer 225 or 230, but 218 will do. MineralMan Oct 2013 #2

We can do this. We should be able to do more than 218, but we'll have to work for it.

If we're not willing to work for it, we won't get it, and we'll know the reason why we didn't.
