Buchanan: 'Redskins' Name Is Meant To Be A Compliment!
Submitted by Brian Tashman on Tuesday, 10/22/2013 10:10 am
Pat Buchanan says there is nothing the slightest bit racist about the Washington Redskins name, arguing that it is meant to be a compliment. If anything, it is American Indians who need to show more respect to Redskins fans, the conservative commentator argues in his latest column:

The answer is no (unless you're a racist asshole) so the name should be changed.

(17,493 posts)The fact is that sports teams are given names that will encourage pride among their fans. It would be highly unusual to name a team the Cockroaches or the Dung Beatles. The Redskins might have been named the Washington Politicians if politicians were viewed in a positive manner in Washington DC. The Pittsburgh Steelers for example have a name that people in live in Pittsburgh were proud of and even today although there are no steel mills in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is still known as the "Steel City."
Why was the team named the Washington Redskins in the first place?
The term is most prominent in the name of the Washington Redskins, a National Football League football team. The team was founded in 1932 and was originally known as the Boston Braves, for their landlords, the baseball team called the Boston Braves. In 1933 the name was changed to the synonymous Boston Redskins when the team left Braves Field for Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox. Some accounts state that the name "Redskins" was chosen to honor the team's coach, William "Lone Star" Dietz, who began coaching in 1933, and whose mother was allegedly Sioux. In 1937 the team moved and joining Capitol Hill as the second football team of Washington, D.C., became the Washington Redskins.[41]
But still the term "redskins" is racially offensive. Unfortunately the owner and the fan base oppose changing the name.
I personally favor changing the name but then I am not a fan with an appreciation of the heritage and history of the team. I feel that eventually the name will be changed but that decision should be left up to the owners and the fans.
