By Betsie Freeman

Former first lady Laura Bush spoke about one of her favorite subjects — education — at a luncheon Tuesday in Omaha.

The wife of President George W. Bush talked about the importance of giving every child a chance to excel at a fundraiser for Phoenix Academy, a nonprofit school in Omaha that helps children with learning challenges.

Bush said children today face challenges that previous generations never knew. She cited drugs, Internet predators and violence as examples and said many children have no one to turn to for help.

“Young people need us in their lives,” Bush said. “They need to know they are valued and their success matters.”

She doubtless is convivial and compassionate human being who shares with us liberals a lot of the same goals for a better society. But her net effect on the political equation is to make an obnoxious, corrosive faction seem. less destructive to the public welfare.
