Anyone who has just seen Frontline will find out that drug resistant super bugs are on the rise and we are losing the fight against them. We have less reliable reporting and containment than in Europe. 2 Million patients are infected each year by super bugs and 23,000 perish.
What makes matters worse is that the free market is failing and we have no coordinated government effort to address the problem. Many drug companies are only developing drugs with high profit potential. Because antibacterial drugs must be used on a limited basis drug companies are reluctant to develop new anti bacterial drugs to counter growing resistance of these super bugs. So drug manufacturers are NOT pursuing anti bacterial drugs because it is not profitable.
This super bug threat is a real threat to all Americans. The GOP's determination to shut down government and privatize everything most likely risks an epidemic which cannot be controlled. Their anti public health policies will make having a big military irrelevant if the population can be decimated by drug resistant bacteria.
At this point in time the government is the only entity who may be able to address this problem. And government shut downs like the recent debacle has already set back some programs years. And it also stops the US from engaging in super bug research.
What do we have to do to these bastards. Whip them into submission with bull whips. Because they definitely refuse to listen.
The large number of uninsured Americans with no health care is a national security risk the GOP is deliberately ignoring. They refuse to protect us because of their obstructionism.

But in their scientific ignorance, they fail to comprehend that multi-drug resistant bacteria don't care what is in their hosts' bank accounts.

It tolls for thee. - John Donne
