OK, what did we fight for again?

What is it with our party that when we win something, we immediately surrender before the dust can really settle.

First there was Senator Shaheen who floated the idea of delaying the mandate for the ACA until they could solve the website problems.

http://blogs.rollcall.com/wgdb/democrat-tells-obama-to-consider-delaying-individual-mandate/

Then Senator Pryor joined the movement. http://www.pryor.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/pressreleases?ID=946b23c7-75aa-444b-9bb2-2d2f6911bb17

Then CNN is now reporting/tweeting that every Dem running for re-election in the Senate is in favor of extending the deadline. Apparently the sticking point is where to put the goalposts. https://twitter.com/DanaBashCNN/status/393110100153352192

So just to make sure I understand the Meme. The GOP has been destroyed, utterly wiped out, completely exposed to the world. But our people up for re-election are now echoing the calls of the GOP because we want the world to know that the GOP made sense when they shut the Government down?

If we quit giving the GOP CPR, we might really be rid of them one day.

This is what politicians of both parties do. They worry about reelection. The purpose of getting elected is to get reelected. They have to stay in office long enough to be sure they get really good jobs as lobbyists afterward.

bunch of folks suing because they couldn't get their applications done in time, couldn't get whatever info they needed. We also need to give those processing the claims the time to do a good job with each one instead of feeling pressured. I don't think that a delay in the mandate is a surrender to the republicans. It may be what makes sense in the long term. Also, the IRS has delayed the filing season due to the shutdown. It makes sense that this would follow. Maybe they should extend it for the length of time the government was shut down. About three weeks. The most important thing is that individuals get the best coverage they can, that will be better politically than holding firm on the deadline. Yes, the Republicans will try to make a big deal out of it, but again they will look like bullies who just want to make sure those applying for ACA are harmed.

9. So we campaign next year on the idea that the Republicans are bad

Because they wanted to delay the mandate for a year, but we're good because we wanted to delay the mandate for less than a year? Then we create the image that everyone should not have as the working reality. We take the incorrect image of both parties being the same, set it in cement, and let that cement harden. We give the Rethugs the cover they need to keep control of the House, and we suppress our own turn out putting control of the Senate at risk as well.

for a month or two would be a bad thing considering the issues with the site. As long as it is still available for sign ups in the mean time I dont really see the harm.

What am I missing?

11. Again the campaign next year.

Republicans bad for wanting to delay the mandate for a year. But we Democrats are good, so get out and vote, because we delayed the Mandate for two months, or three, or whatever the final number was. How do you think that is going to go over with the rest of the voting public? Can you imagine the MSM news stories that will be run about that? We would literally be putting the GOP on life support, and rescuing them.

I dont think anyone has any doubts about that.

I will take the argument on that one come election time.

and millions of people are unable to enroll by February 15th or the process to sign up is extremely frustrating and time consuming? Could this impact the 2014 elections? Could it cause the Democratic Party to lose control of the Senate or weaken its majority?

I think once the ACA is in effect most Americans will strongly support it although it may require some tweaking to eliminate unforeseen problems.

I have no idea how serious the problems with the computer program are, but if they can't be fixed in the next month, we might be wise to delay the deadline for a period of time.

6. I suspect that if they get signed up before the end of 2014

they'll be okay because because they can check off on their 2014 ax form that they had insurance during the year. I'll bet it doesn't ask if you had it for the entire year. Even if that's not the case, the government could extend the signup deadline a month or two. Delaying the mandate a year simply isn't necessary.

the exchange hasn't been functioning well?

If it takes a couple months to iron out the kinks, why not have the deadline be six months after that?
