Just Look Behind the Curtain -- The Donor Lists for the GMO Initiative Say Everything

Washington State Ballot Initiative

Just Look Behind the Curtain
The Donor Lists for the GMO Initiative Say Everything

by Anna Minard - http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/just-look-behind-the-curtain/Content?oid=18019666

In one corner, you've got people—lots of people.

The campaign to pass I-522, the initiative that would mandate labeling most genetically modified (or GMO) food, can point to its parades of supporters. More than 350,000 voters signed their petition, making it the second most popular initiative in Washington State history after pot legalization. Their donor list on the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission's website is a stunning 471 separate pages long. And then there's more: Elizabeth Larter, a 522 spokeswoman, explains that because campaigns aren't required to report contributions under $25, they've actually received more than 13,000 donations. It's a model of widespread, grassroots organization to make big businesses disclose what's in their products.

Then there is the other corner.

The No on 522 campaign has a decidedly different kind of backing. For all their TV ads full of amber waves of grain and local farmers, their entire donor list can be counted on your fingers. The top five are the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA)—a conglomerate of food manufacturers—Monsanto, DuPont Pioneer, Bayer CropScience, and Dow AgroSciences.

"These are the same people who gave us DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, and napalm," says PCC Natural Markets spokeswoman Trudy Bialic. .............

2. Labeling GMO food was a big campaign issue for one Democratic candidate in 2008.

Unfortunately, on Day One, Tom (Mr. Monsanto) Vilsack
was appointed to run the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Michael Taylor, a former lobbyist and lawyer for Monsanto,
was appointed to run the Food Safety Dept at the Food & Drug Administration (FDR).

...and that is just the tip of the Monsanto infestation at the FDA and USDA.

No single payer
TPP
Drones
negotiating with terrorists aka repugs (2011)
Putting reducing rate of SS increases aka chained cpi in his budget
whistleblower mistreatment
cozy with wall street
scathing remarks about the left

many disappointments, but so much better than the crazy alternative(S).

12. GMO food is labeled -- it says "High fructose Corn Syrup" or "Canola" or "Soy"

90% of those are GMO. They could be more clearly labelled but that by itself would not create choice for the consumer.

Is it against the law to label food as "non-GMO"?

6. While I disagree with much of the reasoning (or lack of it) for I 522, seeing exactly who opposes it

Is reason enough to support it.

Thanks for posting this.

8. We might just pass it here.

We seem to be fairly well informed here in Washington state, and very organic minded for the most part...even on the right. This is an issue that crosses a lot of barriers. No one wants poison in their food. Let's see how we do on it.

9. If one wants to see what money can do in opposition, take a look at this contest. Monsanto

and the others involved in trying to shut this down are absolutely FLOODING this place with opposition ads. T.V, radio, glossy brochures in the mail, incessant phone calls, small business people and farmers with signs in front of their business, and now they are being sued by WA for the crooked way in which they have hidden their backers.

The pro forces folks are nearly non-existent. It may not be that way in Seattle, (this is in Spokane, a much redder place) but I try to look at what other people are seeing, and I bet they aren't seeing much.

I think food should be labeled plainly, so I would vote for it. But even if I didn't, the fact that the dirty thieving bastards at Monsanto are against it would be enough.
