(Reuters) - About 700,000 applications have been submitted for U.S. healthcare coverage being offered through new exchanges created by President Barack Obama's healthcare law, a U.S. official said...The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released the number during an update for journalists about the healthcare marketplace, which has had a rocky rollout since enrollment in the new plans began on Oct 1.
The U.S. government is operating the healthcare.gov website, which has been plagued by technical problems since the outset and is the portal for 36 states; the remaining states are operating their own online marketplaces. The nearly 700,000 applications are the total from both the state- and federally-run exchanges, Julie Bataille, a CMS spokeswoman, said on the media call.
Applications for at least 390,000 people have been completed through the state-run exchanges, according to a Reuters tally of state reports.
Completed applications mean that the applicants received a determination about whether they are eligible for tax credits or the Medicaid program for low-income Americans. Applicants have not necessarily chosen a plan.

(65,616 posts)and it will be easy to get medical insurance. I think they made a big mistake outsourcing to Canada to build the system. However, I believe it will help 10's of millions separate their job from their health in the next few years.

(116,464 posts)I mean, if half or even a quarter of the 700,000 chose a plan and enrolled, the rest simply have to choose a plan. They for the most part have completed the process of registering, being offered a plan and qualifying for subsidies. The final step is an individual decision that has nothing to do with the technology. All they have to do now is choose a plan.

(45,806 posts)almost all in the states with Pub governors! Surprise, surprise! Also, I spoke to a friend of mine in Pa. today and asked if she checked out healthcare.gov yet. She said "I know I have until December sometime, so I figured I'd wait until Nov. some time to check." I wonder just how common that is? I suspect quite common. hopefully they'll have most of the bugs worked out in a few weeks so that the slm of people at the last minute won't kill their servers.

(45,806 posts)She's procrastination personified! If she told me Nov. it won't be Nov. 1st. It'll be much closer to Nov., 30th. That's one reason I ask her about it today. I don't live in her state anymore, and I think if I start asking now, I MIGHT get her to check by mid Dec! One advantage I have is that she's coming to visit us for Christmas, so if she still hadn't contacted the site, I, or "WE" will do it together!

(24,294 posts)I have a decision to make - do I want a policy that is better than the one I have now for $2 a month (yes. you read that right, $2) or do I want to pay about two thirds of what I am paying now and have a policy I could have never dreamed of affording until now?
By the way, same insurance company I have now. I can keep my same doctor, go to the same hospital, etc.

(45,447 posts)Processing the determinations for low-income Americans is really an important first step that is entirely on the government so I hope they fix the defects soon.
People like to take their time comparing prices and plans before purchasing. I certainly do for any large purchase, including employer-based insurance plans in the past.
