America "needs to get to its children, before its children get to the drugs." Ive always believed in those words and went so far as coining it as a spokesperson for the DARE program in South Florida some years ago. Do I still believe it? Absolutely. But when it comes to marijuana, I now believe the way to achieve that vaulted goal is not through criminalization, but rather education.
Thats right, its time to do as the Uruguayans and legalize marijuana.
Uruguay appears set on becoming the first country in the world to license and enforce rules for the production, distribution and sale of marijuana for adult consumers. It appears theyve beaten us and many countries around the world to the punch.
Beginning next year, marijuana will be sold by the Uruguayan government at a dollar a gram. The measure is so popular in the country's capital of Montevideo, its already passed the lower house and is expected to pass the senate later this year.
Why are they doing it and why will it be sold so cheap? Julio Calzada, Uruguays drug czar, says its being done to destroy the marijuana market for illegal dealers.

(16,846 posts)I think something like this could work in most countries. The only kink I see in the plan is that there are many varieties of weed, and different people like different varieties. Will they sell several varieties in varying strengths? I'm sure they could charge more for the good stuff and put that money to good use.

(16,846 posts)I think Uruguay is going to see some tourist dollars roll in, too. Montevideo might come to be called 'Little Amsterdam' once they get this rolling.

(3,003 posts)Like Arkansas has money from it's state scratch off tickets going to gambling addiction groups (Or, supposedly. I remember hearing that a portion of it goes to them), part of the money from the marijuana sells can go to drug addiction groups to help get people off harder drugs like coke or meth.
