So it's lying bullshit that they gave him time to drop the fake gun.
No more than 10 seconds elapsed from the time sheriff's deputies spotted a 13-year-old California boy carrying what they thought was an assault rifle and the moment they shot him dead, only to learn afterward the gun was a plastic replica, police said on Thursday.
It took 16 seconds more for the two officers to call for medical assistance, according to the time line of events released by police investigating Tuesday's shooting in Santa Rosa, a suburb in northern California's wine country.
Andy Lopez Cruz, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, had been on his way to a friend's house clutching the imitation gun designed to shoot plastic pellets, police said. He died at the scene. A toy handgun also was found tucked in his pants.
An autopsy performed on Thursday found seven bullets struck the boy, and that two of the wounds were fatal. Investigators believe a total of eight rounds were fired by one of the two deputies who confronted the youth.
The officers involved in the shooting, two deputies of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, have been placed on administrative leave, and the incident was under investigation by the Santa Rosa Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

(8,514 posts)I knew it. "So it's lying bullshit that they gave him time to drop the fake gun." They wanted to kill someone that afternoon and they found a black kid with a toy gun, and no matter how "real" the gun looked, they knew better and they killed him.
They should be put in prison, not on admin leave.

(12,693 posts)The kid could have turned into a zombie after only two rounds and eaten our brains, so we fired six more.
"Everyone went home safe today." Says every cop after they shoot somebody.

(8,514 posts)Usually, they don't, is what that means.
How sad that we have come to this, where they are killing us indiscriminately, with only the flimsiest of excuses.
I hate cops. We really need to defund them, and we can do this with our votes, on a local level.

(34,170 posts)Perhaps you can show me the lie where the police reported engaging in a longer interaction with the teen.

(34,170 posts)If I were to be walking around with a AK style airsoft gun without an orange tip, I would think about it a lot.
Unless it is a homemade rifle, it came with an orange tip that someone removed to make it look real.

(8,514 posts)by then, it was too late for the trigger happy killers, and they put nine slugs into the boy.
We need to defund the police. Run for judge, stop the money from flowing in from their predatory tactics, and start downsizing the police forces.

(8,514 posts)Betcha you got that pic of the cop carrying the milk jugs somewhere in a file, right? Now would be the time to post it.

(34,170 posts)Haven't you been paying attention to this case.
Only after the shooting did deputies realize the gun was a replica that looked strikingly similar to a real AK-47 assault rifle.

(34,170 posts)... what they said beyond the point of mere perspective.
But you said there was NOTHING (your emphasis) in the reports that would indicate the teen swept the police with the muzzle end as he turned around.
The police report is such a report and not my imagination.
Are you ready to admit you were wrong when you said there was NOTHING (again, your emphasis) in the reports that would indicate the teen swept the police with the muzzle end as he turned around?

(8,514 posts)Who do you think you're kidding. It's already been reported that there are witnesses to the murder saying that cop shot the kid in the back! Yet, you continue to spout the pro-cop storyline.
I'm sorry, dude, but I used to play with toy guns as a kid all the time. My son had a BB gun and an airgun. When the day comes that we have to worry about cops shooting kids with toy guns, we need to start questioning ourselves.
These cops killed a kid with a toy gun. Period. They are murderers. Period.

(34,170 posts)edited out the snark.
It appears that two shots were directly to the front and most were on the right side.

(8,514 posts)What do you think is going to happen when NRA types, who are carrying around guns on our streets, in our stores, etc., are shot just because they have guns? There will be hell to pay.
And this was s thirteen year old boy. THIRTEEN. With a toy gun.
Ranchemp.

(6,597 posts)I keep putting myself in the boys shoes, 10 seconds and probably less interaction time than that since they were in the car when they spotted him. How many seconds before the boy realizes they are speaking to him? He's not doing anything wrong, surprised and perhaps shocked to hear police. Probably thinking what is going on? A pause and perhaps the realization they are speaking to him. How long does all that take? I realize cops put their lives on the line but somewhere there has to be some common sense.

(46,328 posts)Teenage kid does stupid thing, walking through the neighborhood with realistic-looking toy gun, and has fake (but realistic-looking) toy pistol jammed in his pants.
Cops get all jumpy and start blasting away before the kid can even react to the command.
Going to be repercussions on the 2 cops involved, and the kid's family will sue, no doubt about that.
ScreamingMeemie
(68,918 posts)Oh, Jesus Christ. Now our sons can not merely walk to a friend's house? That is utter bullshit.
The cop is a murderer. The boy had every right to go over to a friend's house to play.

(46,328 posts)The point is, when I was 13, I could walk up to my firends house up the street with me carrying a toy gun, I lived in a small town, and kids back then even went to school with hunting rifles, since many would go deer hunting right after school.
(Early 1970's, BTW)
But a kid walking through a neighborhood, in a city, where maybe one guy on the block has a gun for hunting, and there's been shootings and crime.
He's carrying not one, but two realistic-looking toy guns, add to that scared cops, (at least one is new on the job,) who blast away after only a few seconds.
I think the cops involved will lose their job.
And the city will pay the family of the kid who was shot, millions.

(2,201 posts)I've read that it was only 10 seconds from when the cops called the stop in, until the shots were fired. I've also read that it was 26 seconds.
My understanding is that the deputy that fired the shots is a 24-year veteran, and the other deputy was a new hire, that had 11 years of experience in another department.
I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that both deputies were in position to shoot the "suspect" when the incident happened.
My question is: Why did only one deputy feel it was necessary to fire? The other deputy didn't fire a single shot, even though he was seeing the exact same thing. It sounds like one deputy feared that he was in imminent danger, and that the other one didn't. That alone puts the justification for the shooting in doubt.

(7,288 posts)heart sick for that poor boy and his family. One shot could be a mistake but seven shots sounds like a trigger happy pig, jmo.

(992 posts)Very small town, local boys and we needed to withdraw some money to buy shells.
Nobody even blinked. It was a different time to be sure,
but 10 seconds to a 13 year old is nothing.
I'm willing to bet the last thing that poor kid thought was
"Are they talking to me?"

(921 posts)We did stupid things like take the tips off our realistic paintball guns as kids and went out to shoot them because it looked 'cooler'. The poor kid just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have happened to myself or any of my friends and at that age I'd not have thought twice about turning around with what I knew to be a toy gun when shouted at.
As for the cops, the jury is still out. The cop could have feasibly never been in that sort of situation before and was on a hair trigger because of nerves causing he/she to fire more than necessary. Now that cop has to live with the death of this little boy for the rest of their life.
