Anti-gay customers refuse tip to server, other patrons rally around him

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
A 20-year-old waiter provided exemplary service at an Overland Park Italian restaurant, but his anti-gay customers refused to tip him because of his sexual orientation.

As word has spread through social media, other customers are coming in to offer words of encouragement and tip the young server extra.

The man works at the Carrabba's Italian Grill near 107th Street and Metcalf Avenue. His mother also works as a hostess and she was very upset by what was written on the back of the check earlier this week after he waited on a couple.

"Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. (Homosexual slur) do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours," the customer wrote. "We hope you will see the tip your (homosexual slur) choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD's love, but none shall be spared for (homosexual slur). May GOD have mercy on you."

I met many homophobic men when I was in the Army and when I worked for a temp agency as a clerk for the SAPD. I notice that this kind of behavior seems to be endemic in occupations where men are predominant and where there is a history of harassment against women and gays. I suppose it's a form of insecurity in one's sexuality that's projected as hostility against LGBT individuals. I've noticed that female homophobes tend to be more hateful in male oriented occupations as well. I don't know why that is. But, this is all anecdotal on my part. Others might have noticed different perspectives of behavior from their own viewpoints and experiences.

Think of a rat with a gaping wound. Its not likely to be curious or compassionate. More likely to lash out indiscriminately at anyone interacting with it, even if they were trying to help it.

They would rather see their neighbor turned into an Old Testament Pillar of salt for what they perceive as wrong doings while the new testament says Love your neighbor as yourself. This is also the Mega-church doctrine of God Loves the Rich White Heterosexual Male and that he made that Class rich because they are chosen to rule over the rest of us, while if you read the new testament you find the Christ was poor and advocated for the poor, chasing the money changers out of the Temple and telling his disciples that "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." He actually demands that the rich give up their wealth and give it to the poor. So the Dominionist idea of rich white men who are chosen by God to rule the rest of us is just Ted Cruz Crazy.

I was brought up christian so know some of the bible and am a Unitarian myself because the idea of waiting for heaven after you die instead of working for good here on Earth today seems like another big lie to me.

We cannot condemn just one group of Christians, for they all follow the same god and read/believe the same book. Some just interpret it differently that others.

By giving one group, with whom you agree/approve of their interpretation, legitimacy in their beliefs you give the same to them all.

Perhaps the issue here is believing in absurd and irrational supernatural nonsense, not which particular absurd and irrational supernatural nonsense.

The scourge of Calvinism is the true evil in American history, politics, and self image. Our national icons for "religious freedom" were and still are the least tolerant among us. Those who think they are God's Chosen, those they see their wealth gained by exploiting everyone else is really a sign from God confirming superior position.

Those New England merchants ran the slave trade, the awful ships, the cane plantations, the distilleries, insurance, banks, shipyards -- the whole mess. The slave trade was centered around Newport, RI. Over 95% of the slaves they brought to the America's went to South and Central American, often to plantations owned by the same families whose wealth allowed them to rewrite history.

Christians should stay out of the Old Testent unless accompanied by a rabbi with all the other books.

Fri Oct 25, 2013, 09:22 AM
Oct 2013

I've never been able to have much respect for much of "christianity", to wit:
Starting right from my birthright, shunned by the puritanical european bloodline, and called my branch of their family "the bad blood". We had to sit at a separate table to eat when my great grandparents were still alive, when visiting my grandparents. They really thought of us as unchristian, soulless creatures due to our "mixed", native blood, and more recently found out some of them in the midwest still think of us that way even in this more enlightened age. No kidding! My other grandma, who was half creek, told me to watch out for christians, reminded me always that they systematically enslaved, tortured and murdered many of my ancestors. Her view on the bible was that it may have been inspired by god, but written by the fallible hands of man.
As a youth, christian-bashing of me as a gay teen became inordinate bullying, justified by their faith. My parents made life unbearable for me, and a local minister banished me when I sought refuge. The only church that eventually fed and sheltered me was Glide Memorial. I even got to meet the master of "christian" hate himself, Fred Phelps, in a ruse plotted to land me in front of him for a hellfire damnation of my soul. I'd never met anyone so repulsive in all my 16 years. It was the beginning of the end of any sort of "normal" youth for me. After my father beat me and attempted to set up a death trap for his "fag" son, I ran away from home.
I still see christians as self-righteous, egocentrical bigots, for the most part. Very few exceptions. I have so much more respect for native american spirtual beliefs, those who didn't get infiltrated by so called "christian" values. Christianity creates the ultimate "consumer", those who slash and burn the land's resources, pollute and so many return nothing at all to the land that sustains them. All justified by some god-given right to those resources over and above "those heathens" over there. They think god put that gun in their hands to murder, mass relocate, enslave and steal the fertile, water accessible lands. Some still even adopt the moniker "inquisitor", convinced of their afterlife placement plan in some golden heaven. They will never know why they have so many karmic lives to lead through the past, present and future. They are naive to the curse of the spirals that actually renders their lives meaningless spins of futility, yet convinced of their spiritual superiority. My blood, and my "schooling of hard knocks" has rendered me able to see so many ironies behind the "american splendor" facade.
There's only one christian prayer I say with regularity: "Jesus save me from your followers. Amen."

This person's views toward a collective group is no different.

I am proud of my church and my Christian views. I also am empathetic towards others. Just this week, I got my haircut by an extremely effeminate male. During the course of the conversation, it was clear he has had a tough life, up to and including recently. I did not see a gay man. I saw an individual having a difficult time and so I tipped him over 50% for the haircut because I could and I felt it was the right thing to do.

To lump me in with this assholes is just as disgusting as other people lumping groups of people.

And mentioned that Glide Church did provide me with needed sustenence. I'm just putting out there my personal spiritual point of view, which includes much of, organized christianity. I have been subject to extremes of NON-empathy by that faith, and not implying or lumping all followers into that category. I'm taking it your beliefs don't condone those of the Westboro bunch, do they? I feel the truly personal followers of christ, who aren't prone to bigotry, who leave judgement up to christ, aren't so bad.
But don't misconstrue my extremely torrid experiences with many who call themselves christian as blanket bigotry towards them. I know some nuns who have helped me heal from that tendency. They are true to their vows, and that is fine. I wouldn't even pretend to judge you personally, but your faith system in general does have certain flaws that leave some children out in the cold, literally.

Christianity doesn't just have "certain flaws." It's meaning is so varied and contradictory that it almost cease to "mean" anything. Evil, ugly, horrible people as well as compassionate, loving, caring people call themselves "Christians."

I favor dichotomizing the whole contradictory concept. Let's call the folks you encountered at Glide "Good People," because that's what they are. And let's call the folks who express their bigotry and hatred publicly -- as the soulless s.o.b.'s did who expressed their spiritual ugliness on a restaurant receipt -- let's call them "unholy assholes."

Historically, the majority of Catholics are Democratic. Currently, it appears it is relatively equal. The problem is that there are two issues that we as a nation are fixated on (not saying it is right or wrong) - abortion and gay rights. THIS, therefore, is what people tend to see, what is focused on and what we hear about. To a lesser extent, women not being allowed in the priesthood also upsets a lot of people. However, in my church and my diocese, anything gender related ends there. Girls are altar servers, women are lectors, women are EME's, etc.

However, if you look at other issues like poverty, capital punishment, assistance for drug/alcohol abuse, etc. the church is VERY liberal. While these collective views contribute to Catholics being strong supporters of the Democratic party, many people focus on 1 or 2 issues and use that to paint the collective view of the church and all its members.

I became a Christian as a young boy in high school and ended up a few years later rejecting the religion completely because of the hypocrisy and judgmental nature of so many who also called themselves Christians. It wasn't a deliberate decision, just a slow realization that something seemed way off. And I had plenty of good experiences while engaged with the church. I can only imagine how you felt having seen the horribleness of the deep seated hatred so many of these people have. I've come to understand that the consequences of their own thoughts and actions are laying out their "path to redemption" and it's not at all what they imagine in their Christian delusions.

Second worst are well-dressed women who appear to have lots of money. Bitchy, demanding, treat wait staff like shit, don't tip.

but I guess another thread is cool.

What boggles my mind is that these people (and I use the term loosely) apparently had no problem talking with this server, putting in their order, letting this server give them their drinks and food (including refills), but all of a sudden got jabbed in the ass by their 'conscience' when it came time to tip? And how did they know the server was homosexual? As far as I can remember, I don't think Carraba's issues uniforms with a big red 'H' emblazoned on the sleeve.

If they truly abhor homosexuality, then they should not patronize businesses who hire homosexuals (following their logic, such as it is). They should run as far and as fast out of any establishment where they see homosexuals employed with the potential to interact with or serve them. Frankly, I think they're going to starve to death real soon unless they start eating at home. And they should also boycott clothing stores who employ gays or sell clothing made/designed by anyone LGBT. Another reason to stay home to eat ... they'll be naked.

Another myth which I always counter with "So you could choose to be gay and take a same sex partner?" If not then why do you see a person's whole life as a choice rather than an expression of who they are. There are even gene markers for homosexuality - its part biology! Look at nature and science and you will find a whole continuum of male to female not just either or.

Satan is nothing compared to God, and Satan is really only God's lackey after all. The only people Satan killed in the Bible was because God told him too. God's kill count on the other hand....

The foundational problem is religion itself. It's an irrational, dangerous belief system.

It's how you have millions of progressive people worshiping the same hateful, genocidal god as these fuckers do, and not think twice about it. It's how hateful beliefs based on religion by conservative religious people can never be defeated by religious reasoning from progressive religious people, because they're using the same flawed system of belief, and there is no reasoning in religion. It's how millions of self-identified liberals enable and perpetuate stupid beliefs, and willingly associate themselves with explicitly bigoted belief systems. Faith is celebrating gullibility as a virtue.

Inside the Christian Right Dominionist Movement That's Undermining Democracy

Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin have all flirted with Christian Right Dominionism, but there's lots of misinformation about just what that means.

Dominionists want to impose a form of Christian nationalism on the United States, a concept that was dismissed as eroding freedom and democracy by the founders of our country. Dominionism has become a major influence on the right-wing populist Tea Parties as Christian Right activists have flooded into the movement at the grassroots.
