Let’s all laugh at Ann Coulter, right-wing performance artist

my own note: I have wondered this at times - I'm not even sure if I agree with this author - but - What can I say? Is it possible that Ann Coulter is no doubt a right-wing ideologue - but most of her public commentary is as our British friends might say "taking a piss"? I don't know, maybe -- D.C.

Let’s all laugh at Ann Coulter, right-wing performance artist

Really, laugh -- her right-wing shtick is the same high-level performance art as Stephen Colbert

In a way, Ann Coulter ceased to be any semblance of a genuine conservative fighter the moment she became known as a major conservative voice. Facts were replaced with detached, often hilarious, political rhetoric that amounted to little more than hot polemic air. Take this quote from “How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)”:

“Like the Democrats, Playboy just wants to liberate women to behave like pigs, have sex without consequences, prance about naked, and abort children.” (2004)

While liberals had a collective meltdown, this quote could be attributed to Lisa Lampanelli with no fanfare whatsoever. It’s a matter of context. Ann Coulter had found the perfect recipe: treating news spaces as comedy platforms where she could deliberately make ridiculous statements to infuriate liberals who would be too dense to notice what was going on. But her performance requires equal condescension to conservatives, without whom the Coulter brand would disappear. Coulter knows her performance hurts the right, and she clearly doesn’t care.

Coulter is often dismissed as a schoolyard bully, but the only thing that really separates her from any mainstream comedian is the platform. Perhaps this is why Coulter counts noted anti-conservative comedians Bill Maher and Joy Behar among her personal friends, appearing with them on-air numerous times over the years. All three are individuals who find large swaths of the American public stupid beyond repair and make a living out of taunting them. Highlighting absurdity by viciously lobbing it back at people is the heart of political comics’ gold standard: George Carlin.

5. Looking at her as a type of "Colbert" comedian puts her schtick in a new perspective.

Look at the rubes that comprise her audience. A fool and his money were lucky to get together in the first place.

7. George Carlin? Are they kidding? Karen Finley is more like it. . .

. . .a famous/notorious performance artist.

(Cynthia Carr's article in the Village Voice June 1986)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I actually read Carr's article on Finley all those years ago; and the most indelible memory I have of it was a photo of Karen Finley with the caption: "I Like To Smell The Gas Passed Up Your Ass" (I'm not joking, folks, that was the actual caption! Trust me!)

So now, I can't read Salon's story about Ann Coulter and the words "performance artist" without thinking about Karen Finley, that infamous Village Voice piece, and that picture/caption. Coulter matches that to a T.

Just my 2 cents.

Nothing she says is genuine. Whether it's for money or some Colbert-esque performance is up in the air.

10. About half the time I think Aaron McGruder got it right

In his "Boondocks" cartoon in the episode where Huey teams up with a publicity hound Black minister (another favorite target of McGruder's) over a racist incident, and he and Ann Coulter go on show after show to debate each other. Finally, they all meet in the green room of another talk show, and she greets the reverend warmly, and she's relatively sweet and hoping that everything turns out right for Huey, which surprises him, to which she explains that if she can't sell books, she might have to start stripping.

And look, there's a clip of it on YouTube. Not for the faint of heart, but that's always been McGruder's style.

11. she is obviously performing

however she is an elitist. Her father was a union buster lawyer and I am from a union family. She came from wealth and she grew up in CT. If you know anything about the pecking order in the NY area it is people of CT. look down at NY who in turn look down at people from NJ. She is performing but deep down she believes that she is better than you.

14. I worked with someone who claimed to know Coulter

and, based on what she said, you're right.

I believed what she said. This person was just as elitist as Coulter, came from very powerful political/conservative circles in NY, and was every bit as unlikable as I find Coulter.

I literally danced in the halls when I heard she quit her job where I worked.

13. Just for the record, the expression your British friends use is....

"Taking THE Piss", not "Taking A Piss"

As in;

"He took the piss right out of him"
"Is he serious?" "No, He's taking the piss out of you."

I don't care who her friends are and who she finds stupid beyond repair. I'm always up for a challenge, so I read this article and then tried to view what Coulter does as performance art/satire. Just can't do it.

17. Annie Coulter's ability to upset us is due to our own fear of offending religion
Mon May 5, 2014, 11:14 AM
May 2014

Annie Coulter believes the following:

CHRISTIANITY: the belief that a cosmic Jewish zobmie who is his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and drink his blood while telepathically telling him that you accept him as your master so that he can remove and evil force from your soul which is present in humanity because a woman made out of one rib bone and the mound of dirt was tricked into eating fruit from a magical tree by a talking snake.

and we take her seriously?? Coulter's ability to upset us thus is entirely due to our fear of being frank about the absurdity of religious belief. And that is due to the power of organized religion to undermine the secular basis of our country.

I suggest that we inform the public about her beliefs every time we write about her. I also suggest we call her "Annie" to confirm that we consider her views juvenile based on silliness.
