Grand jury prepared child abuse indictment against JonBenet Ramsey's parents

A Colorado court on Friday released a long-sealed grand jury indictment of JonBenet Ramsey's parents for child abuse resulting in death, but the documents contained no specifics.

The four pages from the 1999 grand jury — two for John Ramsey and two for Patricia Ramsey — outlined two counts against each parent but did not identify a killer.

Prosecutors decided not to act on the indictment and charge the couple, and the documents remained secret until a newspaper reporter and press-freedom group convinced a judge to unseal them.

On the child abuse charge, the grand jury wrote that the Ramseys "did unlawfully, knowingly, recklessly and feloniously permit a child to be unreasonably placed in a situation which posed a threat of injury to the child's life or health, which resulted in the death of JonBenet Ramsey."

He said that due to extensive remodeling of the house, it would not have been easy for a stranger, not familiar with the house to find the room where her body was found. Jon Benet and her brother slept on different floors than the parents bedroom. There was a door leading to the basement where the body was found, and the light switch at the top of the stairs was in an unusual place inside the door leading to the basement. The stairs were completely darkened and you could not navigate them, especially carrying a child, if you weren't familiar with the layout, which is one of the reasons why they suspected the parents. Also, Jon Benet and her brother had a dog which slept near them and the dog never barked, which you would have expected which would have awaken the parents, had there been an intruder. The ransom note was written in longhand and believed to be Patsy's handwriting even though she tried to disguise it and a draft of the note was found in the trash. Patsy had on the same clothes that she had on the day before, although she had said that she had gone to bed and slept in nightcloths, and put on the same outfight she had worn the day before when she woke up that morning. Detectives did not believe that story.

No one wanted to believe that rich white people kill or cover up the killing of their child.

Too bad that our justice system doesn't provide ALL its citizens, regardless of color, with that "presumption" of innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Dads pubic hair found INSIDE the clean, never washed or worn underwear JeanBenette was redressed in. And the underwear she was redressed in had been wrapped as a Christmas present for a MUCH larger girl -- no burglar could have possibly even known it was there. The list goes on and on and on.

There was never any shortage of evidence that both parents were involved in the cover up and crime. The DA simply did not want to prosecute and blocked every effort to do so. Today it would be impossible, everyone left alive would just point at each other, and there is no way to prove beyond a reasonable doubt who, exactly, did which parts.

Sad, but there it is.
