Giant George, a 5-foot-tall, 245-pound Great Dane, passed away last week, one month shy of his 8 th birthday. He made headlines when Guinness World Records named him the world's tallest dog in 2010.
In his 7 short years, Giant George won the world record and appeared on Oprah, the Today show and Good Morning America. He was even the subject of the book Giant George: Life With the World's Biggest Dog by his owner, Dave Nasser.
"We appreciate the love and support you have given Giant George over the last several years. We look forward to honoring his spirit by continuing his charitable works," Team Giant George wrote in a recent blog post.

Seven seems young, even for a large dog...RIP George

(9,748 posts)My parents and a friend were moving calf and its mother known for her wildness. The cow attacked my mom, driving her into the ground and breaking some ribs. My father and his friend were trying to beat the cow off of my mother. One of them was using a baseball bat. But were having no luck.
We three kids were up by the house about 100 ft or so from where the attack took place. My sister, the oldest, saw our Great Dane barking and straining at its chain.
She loosed the dog.
Dog hit the side of the cow at full stride knocking it off its feet and off my mother.

(25,966 posts)I've heard them called the "heartbreak breed." I once read that some bloodlines die even as young as 6 years, and there was a call to get some better diversity and vigor into some of the purebread lines.
We had a Dane who lived to 11, which is rather good. She was also "only" about 135 lb -- barely half what Giant George weighed.

(30,741 posts)They live about seven or eight years.
We looked at one when we were looking at rescue dogs. The lady who ran the shelter was reluctant to give him to us, because we do not have a fenced yard. We have a huge lot, and we take our current dog running on the nearby nature trail. She likes to run, but
she is well trained, and will not stray.
Bloodhounds will run away, chasing a scent relentlessly. We couldn't risk it.
The shelter lady took this bloodhound, and said she would love him and take good care of him, whether his time was short or long.
