Officer Who Pepper Sprayed Peaceful Protesters Receiving Larger Settlement Than His Victims

During the 2011 “Occupy” protests a University of California-Davis police officer was caught on video pepper spraying student protesters. Now former officer John Pike has been awarded a $38,059 workers’ compensation settlement from the incident.

According to The Davis Enterprise, former officer John Pike claimed he had suffered depression and anxiety following the event.
Those conditions stemmed not from regret or remorse, but from death threats Pike claims he received. The video of the event shows Officer John Pike walking along a line of seated students, dousing them with pepper spray. The video went viral and has been viewed on YouTube almost two million times.

The Davis Enterprise quotes lawyer Bernie Goldsmith as saying:

(The settlement) sends a clear message to the next officer nervously facing off with a group of passive, unarmed students: Go on ahead. Brutalize them. Trample their rights. You will be well taken care of.
