This young man (28) is living in the basement of his parents house. He has a minimum wage job. This is in Michigan. His mother and step-dad both work earning around 65,000 in combined income. He has a younger sister (18) who goes to school and works part time in retail. Any ideas on what he can expect when applying for health insurance?
I ask this because i want to sit him down at a computer and get him signed on and insured.

(3,929 posts)I have insurance through employment, but can't afford coverage for kids and don't qualify for CHIPS because they are grandkids. Seems we stick with Medicaid:
From FAQ's:
'Im raising my grandchild and claim her as a dependent. If I apply for Marketplace subsidies, will we be considered a household of two?"
"Yes, you will be considered as a household of 2 for both Medicaid and premium tax credits. However, your grandchild will be considered as her own household for Medicaid and CHIP and your income will not count in determining her eligibility for these programs. Assuming she does not have her own income she will likely be eligible for Medicaid or CHIP and not eligible for premium tax credits for coverage in the marketplace. You could of course purchase coverage for her in the marketplace but you would not be eligible for a premium tax credit to help pay for her plan. Whether you could include her on your policy would depend on what insurers offer in your Marketplace."

(27,315 posts)However, I cannot remember if Michigan expanded Medicaid. If it did not and he is in the portion of expanded Medicaid, he unfortunately will be out of luck.
Note to the GOP: yes, this creates an incentive not to improve one's situation, but whose fault is it? YOURS. There has been months to solve this issue. You preferred spending time and money making sure these people got nothing.

(2,949 posts)First concern is living in a household with additional income and second concern is Michigan expanded medicaid but the Republicans in congress set it up to not take affect until April.

(27,315 posts)It would be different for a spouse.
At least, it does not matter for my son who lives with us and was without work between college and graduate school.

(39,215 posts)have been living with my daughter or my nephews for years now because I cannot afford housing (many senior housing units have very long waiting lists). Because I live with relatives I lose out on some programs. Minnesota SSI for instance.
One way around this is to declare shared housing which means you are two separate families.
for all the replies. I went to link provided and found some good results. Now i have to corner that young man and get him on the computer.
Thanks again
