What a GOP controlled America would look like

Last edited Sun Oct 27, 2013, 01:24 PM - Edit history (1)

They currently have the House and the Supreme Court. What would happen if they could also get hold of the Senate and the White House?

Broadly speaking, blacks, browns, gays, women, the elderly, the poor and the disabled would all be screwed beyond imagination. Forget about any program aimed at helping people. Forget about empathy, decency and simple fairness. Forget about the existence of a middle class. Think Dante’s version of hell.

It seems unlikely that they could win the White House, or even the Senate. But they could certainly steal both given the number of states they currently govern and control. Voter suppression, “cleansed” voter rolls, and “lost” or “misplaced” ballots can work wonders. Think Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 which gave us eight years of Bush/Cheney. But even those eight years could look like a pretty good deal given how grotesque the Republican/Teabagger Party has become.

I don’t believe that they could actually gain control of all the levers of power. But you never know. History shows us what well-organized, ruthless minorities are capable of. The thought of it is totally terrifying.

I would imagine that most cities would soon look much like Bombay slums and the cities of China.

Edited to add: I remember the slums of the 1950s/1960s and I never want to see that become the norm in this country again.

Look what is happening in Texas these days for, one example, the state is de-paving county/rural roads... seriously, tearing up the pavement and converting to gravel because they say that the pavement is too costly to maintain. But one might argue that the cost of tearing up the pavement would be similar to actual maintenance, no?

Major shift in the way the 99 per cent interacts with government needs to take place as well as an end to feeding the overfed corporate beast.

will never truly succeed--be ALLOWED to succeed, now or in the future, no matter how much ordinary folk might agree with Democratic principles and values (fairness, common good, looking out for the powerless, etc.) The American people have been and will be punished for voting for Democrats--and I almost don't care anymore.

I seem to recall that one of the things that helped defeat Barry Goldwater in the 1960s was the fear of giving him control of the nation's nuclear arsenal. Goldwater was considered an extremist with a few screws loose.

Let's hope that the prospect of allowing Cruz and other teabagger crazies control of nukes and drones and a worldwide electronic spying network is enough to frighten voters in the 2014 and 2016 elections.
