Why would Romney want a room hidden behind a bookcase?

I'm serious, his new house has a "office storage" room, hidden behind a bookcase.

Mitt Romney's New Mansion Complete With Hidden Room Behind Bookcase

By Diane Sweet

Maybe he's going to hide his tax returns in there?

"The front door of Mitt Romney’s soon to be constructed Hollady house opens to a massive living room, and to your left, around the fireplace, lies a study. If you look closely at the bookshelves there, you find something interesting: a secret door. The second bookshelf from the far wall is really a door that swivels out to reveal a hidden room... The architectural drawings say it’s for "office storage." It measures 11 feet long and is lined with cabinets. The "hidden door," as it’s labeled on the documents, is masked as a bookshelf and swings into the study."

The rooms are considered to be secure areas that family can retreat to in the event of something like a home invasion. No surprise that Romney would have such a room.

They'll be studying this sinister hidden room in the better architecture programs for years.

A HIDDEN room? Why...that's astounding. CONCEALING a room so as to keep things SAFE or PRIVATE?
Are you sure that's RIGHT? I'm having a hard time believing that such a thing could be.

A CONCEALED room.

I don't think we have the capacity to understand its ramifications (other than to assert with
confidence that since Romney has it, it must be bad. No Democrat would or could dream of
a CONCEALED room, as evidenced by their complete nonexistence until today). Maybe
if some occult blending of Kierkegaard and I.M. Pei were possible...maybe THEY could
help us comprehend this alteration of the social and architectural fabric.

A. HIDDEN. ROOM. I'm trying to rationalize it as a long closet, too.

That's the only way I can carry on, at this point. The dread of the alternative explanation - a room that is CONCEALED - is too much to fathom.

A giant safe for people. He's cheap, though--the best panic rooms have access to water--a crapper/sink is deluxe, and provisions for air handling. Maybe he'll put a porta-potty in there...? Don't forget the MRE's and a power point with a well charged cell phone, too. He'll want a few cases of water, as well, since there's no sink--ya never know how long it'll take to get rescued!

He's also stupid--he should have left off the book case in the construction plans, and had those built AFTER he took delivery of the house. That way, he's not announcing to the world where his "panic room" is.

I've been in a few panic rooms (before they were called "panic rooms" too) so have some experience in this regard!

Not to "hide" stuff but to put it out of sight. Nothing uglier than a row of filing cabinets. Hel, nothing uglier than a single filing cabinet.

As far as behind a bookcase? Why not? The alternative is a door or an opening, neither of which offers any utility.

In one of my home designs I had a wine cellar off a bar. At the end of the space between the front bar and back bar was a hallway then at the end a door into the climate controlled wine cellar. I always thought it'd be interesting to build a cabinet for wine glass display which hinged to provide access to the hallway...never got a chance to do that.

If you have the money or ability to do something out of the ordinary? Why not?

Added: In my current home I have an alcove under the basement staircase. I plan to install a dry bar with 2 refrigerators...one of which will slide out to provide access to a storage area under the stairs. That's where the xmas stuff will go. Inconvenient to access but hey, only twice a year.
