yes, there have always been crackpots and they've had influence before- think Father Coughlin, but now with the internet and talk radio the crackpots have a much bigger megaphone.

(4,711 posts)The media, desperate to fill the 24/7 news cycle, reports all viewpoints the same in the name of balance, even those that are founded on lies, conspiracy theories, paranoia, what have you. No reporter ever seems to say "...but that's ridiculous."
And even if they are confronted, they retreat to "Well, that's my stance. That's what I believe." As if being entitled to one's opinion has any relevance in the face of facts or the truth.
