I speak both Hebrew and Spanish. Only an idiot would confuse the two.

I can't wait to go back home next summer with my wife and speak Chinese on the street with her. I'm expecting to get shot and her beaten up for speaking "commie talk."

Since we all know "Speak Chinese and spread disease."

I wish I could speak Hebrew.

I love languages; It runs in my family.

I have two cousins who can sing fluently in Hebrew although they do not speak the language. A result of a close friendship with a Jewish lady living in Mexico.

At the very least, I wish I could read Ladino; an ancient dialect of Spanish that is written in the Hebrew alphabet.

From what I've read, it does seem that a fair number of Jewish persons did make their way to Nuevo Leon during the colonial pre-independence era.

And yes, there is a lot of Jewish blood coursing through Northern Mexico. It's a shame that the culture perished though the people survived.

Monterrey is definitely one of those areas.

On a personal mea culpa I once mistook Portuguese for Russian.

Portuguese sounds like a French guy speaking Spanish with a head cold.

Last night while On Line, I got the "This is America" speech, followed by "Speak fucking English" .... I was like WTF! I could not believe she said that to me.. I my friends and I wanta practice my Japanese, I should be allowed to. This was on an international website as well.. I guess she must of thought we were TALKING ABOUT THEM... we had no interest in them.

I was at the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, AZ once. I went into the Truck Stop area and saw these two Navajo college students (I was in graduate school at the time) talking to each other in their native language.

As I sat down at a table next to them, a big fat, hairy, smelly (and I mean RIPE) white guy with a stained t-shirt with the confederate flag on it and the sleeve cut off so we can see his armpit hair, unkempt beard, long greasy stringy hair and a big fat gut comes up to them and starts yelling at them.

Shocked, the two Navajo do nothing but listen. He starts screaming about how they are an insult to his country (all in a deep southern accent) and ends by saying (and I will never forget this):

"In America, we spake English. Talk English or go back to where you came from."

Then, fatso walked away.

Now. . .HE SAID THIS TO NAVAJO!!! NAVAJO!!!! I will repeat. . .NAVAJO!!!!

I walked up to these two almost in tears girls and said "don't worry. Not all white men are assholes like that." Then I showed them my mother's Iroquois BIA number (she was adopted), smiled and walked away.

When I lived in AZ, I spoke Spanish as much as possible. English is the come-later conquistador tongue in the SW and California and should be treated as such. Besides, Spanish is a better language. Native American languages are even better. I've only learned one, but it is far better than European languages.

But its seems so much worse when it actually happens to you... You are just stunned that people have the nerve and walk up to your face and tell you, SPEAK FUCKING ENGLISH... you can only look at them and wonder WHAT planet they come from.

Unfortunately, Japanese is not one of them. Korean and Chinese are.

I would like to be better with my Japanese but its hard to find anyone to practice with. I am hoping one of these days to go back to school..and improve. I want to be fluent, more than anything. It be nice to be able to read Kanji too some day.
