The big news out of the Virginia Republican primary: extremely low turnout. (updated)

2008:

McCain 244,829

Huckabee 199,003

Total votes: 489,252

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Republican_primary,_2008

2012 (with 99 percent reporting)

Romney: 147,693

Paul: 101,932

Total votes: 249,625

http://www.cnn.com/election/2012/primaries/state/va

That's 51 percent of the 2008 total. McCain got almost as many votes as Romney and Paul combined.

Updated to add:

Depending the other results of the night, this puts the shortfall at nearly one million for this primary season thus far.

Rick could have given Mitt a real race in Virginia...what a moron for not getting himself on the ballot.

but Mitt got fewer votes than the top two candidates last election cycle. Paul got nearly five times as many votes as he did in 2008.

It appears the Not-Romney vote may have been in effect here.

the big picture shows a distinct lack of enthusiasm for Republican candidates this cycle. If they can't turn the base out in the primaries, the marginal Republican voters and are going to be MIA in November.
