St. Patricks Day is right around the corner. If you are still eating healthy from your New Years resolution this year, you might be glad to find that drinking beer has many surprising health benefits. So, go ahead and enjoy that green beer, because it might just be doing you some good! Remember, though, to always drink in moderation, and be sure to get a designated driver to get home safely.
Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
All alcohol, whether it is beer, wine, or liquor, is known to help reduce heart disease. According to a 2008 article in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, moderate consumption of alcohol makes blood less sticky, and so it is less likely to clot. Alcohol can also increase good cholesterol and lower the bad, as well as lower your blood pressure. A Harvard study of 70,000 women found that those who consumed beer had a lower blood pressure than those who consumed wine or hard alcohol.
Helps the Kidneys
Alcohol gets a bad wrap for being hard on your kidneys, but beer can actually help in that department. According to the 2011 ADA Times, beer can actually reduce your risk of kidney stones. The hops not only help slow the release of calcium from the bones too much calcium can cause kidney stones but beer also has a high water content, which helps clear out those kidneys.

(8,159 posts)I don't like the taste of beer but love Guinness.
Yes the bottled version in America is hardly what is found in Ireland but I still like it better than beer.

(32,095 posts)Guinness is beer.
I got to visit St. James Gate several years ago before they built the fancy, new Sky Bar. I'd love to go back to see it again. And, yeah, the Guinness here is definitely inferior to what one gets in Ireland.

(30,947 posts)I went to Ireland and it was really a thrill sit at a pub and have Guinness on tap. In fact, because I am a woman the bartender gave me a small beer glass. All the men were drinking big mugs full. I said that I wanted the same size as they had.

(8,159 posts)It was as though they thought I wouldn't like it. Boy were they wrong.
I'm told each pub's Guinness can be a little different but I didn't find any I didn't like lol.

(8,311 posts)For a PSA, though, my stepfather may be on the liver transplant list soon thanks to stage 4 cirrhosis. Had two bleedouts and a portal vein shunt to try to stop the recurrent bleeds. He quit drinking after the first, but there's a lot of damage already done. Sad it got that far, and for the last few years, all he was drinking was ... beer.
Moderation, people.

(8,311 posts).... or their consumption going down but staying just as drunk... it might be a good idea to convince them to go in for a liver function test. We all knew he had a problem, we just didn't realize how much damage he'd done to himself. The surgery should stop the gastric bleeds (the second time he had to be intubated to keep an airway through the blood), but it increases the risk of hepatic encephalopathy among other things.
As often as I wished my stepdad would quit drinking, I never wanted him to "hit bottom" in this fashion.
