Montana Anti-Trapping Group Gets Death Threat for Releasing Photos
On March 16, a Friday, a US Forest Service employee from Grangeville, Idaho, laid out his wolf traps. The following Monday, using the name Pinching, he posted his story and pictures on www.Trapperman.com . I got a call on Sunday morning from a FS [Forest Service] cop that I know. You got one up here as there was a crowd forming. Several guys had stopped and taken a shot at him already, wrote Pinching. The big, black male wolf stood in the trap, some 300-350 yards from the road, woundedthe shots left him surrounded by blood-stained snow. Pinching concluded his first post, Male that went right at 100 pounds. No rub spots on the hide, and he will make me a good wall hanger.
(The person in this photograph, Josh Bransford is a federal employee and public servant out of the Red River Ranger District on the Nez Perce National Forest in north-central Idaho. As a taxpayer, you have a right to call the Front Desk and complain about his behavior. Call for his resignation and/or ask that he be suspended without pay for a period of time for his actions 208-842-2245.)
All photographs were taken from Trapperman.com website are being reproduced here under Fair UsePinching with the wolf he trapped that he wrote would make him a good wall hanger.
The Trapperman website went wild with comments. Thats a dandy!! Keep at it, wrote Watarrat. Otterman asked, All the gray on that muzzle make a guy wonder how old he is or if it is just part of his black coloring. Pinchings picture of the wolfs paw caught in the trap got special attention. Is that the MB750 stamped wolf on the pan? asked one man. Looks to be a perfect pad catch. Congratulations! Pinching confirmed the trap model and commented, Oh an [sic] by the way, a wolf is a heck of a lot of work to put on a stretcher! Man those things hold on to their hide like no other!

I told him he was a despicable monster for his abhorrent behavior with these magnificent animals and I stand by that, no death threats, just threats to try and end his taking my tax dollars for his salary while he perpetrates this horrifying behavior.

(86,760 posts)since I know a bit about this story...
The guy was duly harangued, but he didn't lose his job. Yes, he works for the USFS and he wasn't the one using the wolf for target practice, that was a few other pukes doing it from their vehicle and the guy in the picture's friend called him to come and tend to the wolf. Sadly, in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Wisconsin and Minnesota trapping wolves is legal. In Idaho there's a half year season.
Wish folks had noticed this before the wolves were removed from federal protection a few years ago. Last year, almost every single wolf with a research collar in Yellowstone NP was killed by hunters sitting not far from the boundary of the park using calls. That was over twelve years of federal taxpayer funds for research (and some from nonprofits) down the drain for this "sport" The alpha pair from a pack I was watching for years were killed off early in the "season" last year... the forest has lost some of its allure for me around here because of it.
SO the guy in the picture got some serious blowback for posting his smirk online and then whined about the condemnation he got nation-wide. This did go viral but the folks who floated it online received death threats afterward. It's a dirty game out here and one needs to be careful about flaming. For the up-to-date tally and an equaling galling tale from this year's hunt so far you can peruse this site and learn about as much as you could from one web site...

As a result of delays caused by the lapse in federal appropriations, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced rescheduled dates for the remainder of a series of public hearings on two proposed rules-one to list the Mexican wolf as an endangered subspecies and delist the gray wolf elsewhere, and the other to improve recovery efforts for the Mexican wolf in the Southwest. Comment period deadlines also are extended until December
17 to allow these hearings to take place within the public comment periods on the proposed rules.
The hearings will take place on November 19 in Denver, Colorado, November
20 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and November 22 in Sacramento, California.
Each will include a short informational presentation. The Service has also added a public information meeting and hearing in Pinetop, Arizona, on December 3. The hearings are part of the Service's continuing efforts to provide an open, comprehensive public process for the two proposed wolf rules and will provide the public a forum by which to register their views.
A formal notice of these hearings and the extension of the comment period will appear in *the Federal Register* on October 28.
To learn more about the proposed rules, view the draft *Federal Register*notice with the details of the public hearings, and for links to submit comments to the public record, visit www.fws.gov/home/wolfrecovery.

Welcome to state management. The above is the image at the center of Bill Gibson's latest article. The outfit that posted the image is killing wolves on public land in the Thorofare. Some of the wildest country in the contiguous United States, for contained therein is the farthest point from any road. The ignorantly hateful will hunt down wolves to the ends of the earth if we let them.
There is currently an official public comment period ongoing until December 17th where folks can state their opposition to a Nationwide gray wolf delisting proposal. Please consider doing so if you have not already. The above image is the stark reality of state management. And if this goes through from sea to shining sea, it will strip federal wolf protection even in states who have fledgling wolf populations trying to recover, and those with only one or two individuals dispersing through on quests to begin their own families.

Talking points: http://nywolf.org/components/com_wordpress/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Gray-Wolf-Toplines-and-Commenting-instructions.pdf
There is also a public comment period closing on the same date for a proposed revision to rules governing Mexican wolf recovery. Whilst this southwestern population is the only one not currently being threatened with the removal of federal protection, it has been struggling due to mismanagement as well. There are only about 75 individuals and 3 breeding pairs left in the wild here in the US, and 2 in Mexico. It was projected by the USFWS that we would have 102 wolves and 18 breeding pairs by December 31, 2006, but they have been far too liberally "removed". They are an ancient form, amongst the first waves of Old World wolves to migrate into the country, and now they are amongst the rarest mammals on the continent.
You can send a comment for them here: http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=FWS-R2-ES-2013-0056
Talking points: http://www.mexicanwolves.org/index.php/news/1059/51/Act-Now-to-Ensure-Mexican-Wolf-Recovery
Gray wolves were previously delisted in Idaho and Montana through a rider on a must pass budget bill back in April 2011. This was the first time that any Endangered species had ever been delisted by Congressional action. Prior to this wolf advocates were winning in the courts, because science was and is on our side. It took this underhanded political strategy to force this outcome.
Later gray wolves in Wyoming were delisted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe after his nomination to be director of the agency was essentially held hostage by Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) with the intention of forcing a wolf delisting decision. Previously, even the USFWS had deemed their kill-on-site "management" plan to be inadequate. That's how bad it is. Politics as usual. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar (Cowboy Kenny) met with Wyoming Governor Matt Mead and eventually Dan Ashe was appointed and wolves were delisted (read about this juicy filth, here: http://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/article_f7b22b5f-c71f-52be-b0e9-324c9c33fa3b.html)
Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan were soon to follow. Michigan's first killing season is swift approaching, beginning on November 15th. Wisconsin is in its second killing season, "Just 16 days into Wisconsins second annual wolf season, half of the states six harvest zones have closed." Timber wolves are being killed at a rate of 12-13 per day.
More than 1,700 wolves have been killed since ESA protections were taken away in five states. in less than three years. Please help stop this rush toward functional extinction at best. http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/gray_wolves/infographic.html
If you would prefer to speak up for wolves in person, there are four hearings coming up where you can oppose the USFWS's delisting proposal and their flawed Mexican wolf recovery plan:
Tuesday, November 19, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place, Denver, CO.
Wednesday, November 20, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Embassy Suites, Sandia Room, 1000 Woodward Place NE, Albuquerque, NM.
Friday, November 22, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the Marriot Courtyard Sacramento Cal Expo, Golden State Ballroom, 1782 Tribute Road, Sacramento, CA.
Tuesday, December 3, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hon-Dah Conference Center, 777 Highway 260, Pinetop, AZ 85935 (3 miles outside of Pinetop at the Junction of Hwy 260 and Hwy 73).
