http://www.tennessean.com/article/20131104/NEWS06/311040031In 2000, the Tennessee Supreme Court struck down restrictive abortion laws and ruled that under the state constitution, women have a fundamental right to choose. All of that could change if Tennessee becomes the latest domino to fall one year from now with the proposed referendum to change the state constitution, allowing the (majority Republican) state lawmakers to step in and enact draconian restrictions. As you can see from the linked article, this is going to be contentious and drenched in religious posturing. The clown car has already arrived with the fecund Duggar family being imported to weigh in against the rights of women. For those of you who are not from Tennessee, I will point out the irony that their speaking engagement is at Cornerstone Church, a "megachurch" run by con-artist Rev. Maury Davis. (Davis was a drug dealing punk in Texas who slit a middle-aged woman's throat when he became enraged at getting paint on his boots while viewing an apartment she was trying to rent. He subsequently "got religion" in prison, got an early release, and now lives in a fancy house in a gated community here and drives an expensive sports car while fleecing the gullible. Oh, yeah, and this convicted murderer has the temerity to judge! If this sounds too bizarre for belief, check this out: http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashville/a-grieving-son-finds-no-justice-on-rev-maury-davis-path-to-redemption/Content?oid=1201523 ).
As it says in the Tennessean article, "The effort to defeat the measure, however, has not been dormant. Planned Parenthood affiliates in Tennessee and the American Civil Liberties Union have conducted polling and focus groups, secured commitments for donations and begun working with local and national groups to get organized and develop a plan." This proposed referendum would affect women throughout the region, as "the Tennessee constitution bars other laws that neighboring states have enacted, including waiting periods, bans on later trimester abortions and required ultrasounds. Those added restrictions have led more women from other states to come to Tennessee to have abortions, a Tennessean special report in May 2012 found. More than 1 in 4 abortions in Tennessee were sought by women from out of state, according to an analysis of abortion data."

(14,921 posts)Too often we have bemoaned, a day late and a dollar short, when this basic right has been taken away in one state or another. Or, some here busy themselves at their keyboards with hypotheticals of whether certain rhetorical points are paternalistic, while reality takes an extremely ugly turn and is in danger of getting even worse. There is nothing "thinly veiled" about this referendum!

(14,921 posts)which currently shows 63% opposition to the referendum! However, Nashville is much more progressive and diverse than much of the state, so this probably isn't representative of where we are statewide on this. Still....

Passage of this referendum would be a terrible thing. They are already lying, saying that there is currently "no informed consent" when women choose to terminate a pregnancy. Of course that is a blatant lie, but it is true that we don't have the type of mandated harassment and emotional abuse that some of the other states have enacted. The rethugs in the legislature could change that if this monstrosity passes. We could use any support and encouragement here that you might offer. This is only one of many issues that we are facing here in the upcoming year. There was an article in today's paper which said that the school voucher folks are about to ramp up their campaign again, and much else is going on. There is clearly going to be some religious-political collusion going on.
