NPR is not the place to go for news that might displease the PTB.

It's only broadcast by one local station, as far as I can tell, and I'm only in range for about six minutes.

Before the website fiasco, the coverage was constantly the Republican shutdown and (justifiable) criticism of the GOP and their Crazy Caucus.

It almost seems like media outlets are taking this opportunity with the website to show, "hey look we also criticize Democrats and stuff too!"

Let me restate that my summary was an exaggeration, of course.

Still, as you note, this is likely another dubious attempt at "balance," as if the two subjects (potential world-wide economic disaster vs. inconvenient software issues) were equally destructive or urgent.

Is there anyway to signify to our local affiliates how tired we are of this? I don't think it's simply matter of not pledging when ME or ATC are on. I'm sure the lion's share of our donations are going toward buying this programming on behalf of the local networks, so how do we collectively suggest they produce their own programming or substitute it with BBC radio for example (I'm sure there is a better example than that but I haven't had enough coffee and I'm just boarding a flight to the West Coast).

For example, this morning was about a lady whose plan, through Humana, was cancelled. No mention of any specifics about her previous plan. (There NEVER is in these stories - the cancelled plans are all treated as all-encompasing "insurance&quot .

Lady goes on to say how "even the cheapest bronze plan through Humana costs more". Uh - why are these folks never told that they DO NOT have to use their existing provider? It's ridiculous.

No depth to the story, no investigation. Just tabloid BS, same as every other news network.

Was that the lady whose monthly cost would go up $100/month with an ACA plan? Was there any mention that she probably qualified for a subsidy? Any mention that the ACA policy probably would cost yer less out of pocket during the year, actually saving money rather than costing more?

I didn't hear the whole report, but it was not at all objective.

Coincidentally I got a call from the NPR radio station yesterday asking if I could donate. I told them I wouldn't give them anything if any of the money went to their sister enterprise, the PBS station which seems to be mostly controlled by GE and other corporations. I did agree to make a small donation. I think when I receive that pledge card, I will send it back with a letter explaining why I no longer contribute. It is not this one case. That is how NPR operates pretty much all the time now. And this station switches over to the BBC overnight, which is far right-wing. I don't know what happened to the BBC, but it is not what it was 20 years ago.

The thing is, Washington residents don't use the national website. Washington state has its own exchange, and the website for it works great. It took me less than two minutes to find a good and inexpensive policy.

The good news about the Washington state exchange is not reported. Since good news for Obama is bad news for the republicans, we won't see it on TV.

These idiots have obviously not even tried to get on the system. They are just repeating Faux lies, which is how the media cycle works now.

Of course the Repubes knew that would happen when they infiltrated it.

They put political appointees in, and those political appointees "recommended" people for paying jobs down the line. Before Bush left, many of the appointees transitioned to non-political jobs, too....

As a consequence, the little fuckers are everywhere in the organization.

Kaiser foundation has been a go-to source of non-teabagger ACA media info and seem to have had a hand in the legislation. I happen to have a Kaiser policy, Mrs has one too, and it's pretty good. They're big on preventative medicine and not stingy with office visits or procedures. So I was surprised to hear a story yesterday featuring a lady who claimed to have had her cheap-o Kaiser individual plan cancelled and replaced with one 2x as expensive. Didn't know they sold individual plans for one thing since Kaiser is an employer plan, originally connected to Kaiser steel.

Anyway NPR is a mixed bag, for sure. Beats Democracy Now though which has been nasty tea-bag territory for the last few years. Big on Greenwald, Hedges, Scahill, Chomsky, the whole ratpack. At least NPR includes some actual news in the mix.
