Sen. Tom Coburn is being treated for a recurrence of prostate cancer, The Oklahoman reported Tuesday morning.
John Hart, the Oklahoma Republicans longtime spokesman, told the newspaper that Coburn should be back in the Senate soon, hopefully next week. Hart confirmed the news to CQ Roll Call.
Coburn, who has long said he will not seek another term in the Senate, was treated in October 2011 for what was described by Hart in a statement at the time as an early stage incidence of prostate cancer.
The senator has a long record of bouts with cancer, dating to treatment for melanoma in 1975.
Coburns absence for medical treatment comes just as his home-state colleague, Republican James M. Inhofe, has returned to the Capitol following quadruple bypass surgery.

(16,093 posts)But I could really give two shits about Coburn...he's probably got some of the best health insurance that tax payers can provide!
It's a good thing that his pre-existing condition didn't disqualify him!

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn has been diagnosed with a recurrence of prostate cancer, his spokesman said Tuesday.
Coburn will be undergoing further evaluation and treatment, John Hart said. The Republican senator will miss this week of work and hopes to return as soon as next week.
Coburn, who is also a physician, has survived three previous battles with cancer. He had prostate cancer surgery in October 2011 and has also been treated for colon cancer and melanoma in the past.
Coburn missed a procedural vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act on Monday, which happened to be the same day that Oklahomas other GOP senator, Jim Inhofe, returned to Capitol Hill after emergency heart surgery in October. Inhofe missed a month of Senate work after open-heart surgery and cast a procedural vote against ENDA on Monday night.
