11/5 Evictions, raids, Mayor candidate and Socialist City Council candidate in Minneapolis

* Minneapolis is having its 1st Ranked Choice Voting. The current Mayor did not run for reelection. There are 35 candidates running and we get to vote for our 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

and Ward 9 city council member decided not to run for re-election.. so the great young activist from Ward 9 decided to run for City Council.. and is blowing away the DFL Party.

Ty Moore is the Socialist running for City Council in Minneapolis.
He has been part of the backbone of Occupy Homes MN and other social justice groups in Minneapolis.

Ty has raised the most money and has the largest group of volunteers. He received the Green Party endorsement, and just might end up winning.

Jaymie's home was Foreclosed on, she has been fighting back with Occupy Homes help and she joined in the race for Mayor as the Stop Foreclosure Mayor candidate. Ty Moore's fundraisers were often at Jaymie's house

at 5am this morning the Sheriff raided Jaymie's home to evict her and her family. Many of those who took off work to help Ty Moore ended up racing to Jaymie's house.

So did the City actually think they could slow Ty's campaign down? Ain't gonna happen.. there are too many supporters and they have too much energy.

"We have halted Jaymie's illegal 5am eviction and are currently in a standoff with management. Please come to Jaymie's on 38th and 11th if you're able. This eviction is an intentional attempt to disrupt our city council candidate's GOTV effort, but it's clearly backfiring. We're going to win Jaymie's house and Ty Moore's election!"

"Sheriff Stanek, JPMorgan Chase, and Freddie Mac thought they could disrupt us and Ty's election with a 5 am Election Day raid--but the community was ready with a rapid response. We will win Jaymie's home and Ty's election, and we shall NOT be moved."

I'll let you know if Ty Moore wins tonight.

1. Huffington Post: Sheriff Tries To Evict Minneapolis Mayoral Candidate On Election Day

wow, it is also in Huffington Post. I hope this inspires others and their communities to fight back against Foreclosures

A Minneapolis mayoral candidate running on the "Stop Foreclosure Now" ballot line said sheriff's deputies tried to evict her from her house Tuesday morning -- Election Day.

Around 5 a.m., just hours before polls were to open, Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies broke in Jaymie Kelly's front door, shattering its glass, and dragged her 23-year-old daughter out of bed in handcuffs, Kelly told HuffPost. "They knock and destroy. They don't wait," she said.

Kelly, 63, is a retired postal clerk who has been fighting to say in her foreclosed South Minneapolis home with the help of activists from the group Occupy Homes. She is also running a protest candidacy in the mayoral race, one of 35 candidates in a crowded field.

Although Kelly has no serious interest in becoming mayor, she asserts the eviction attempt was "just a little bit too coincidental." She believes it may have been timed to coincide with get-out-the-vote efforts for Ty Moore, an Occupy Homes supporter who is vying to become the first socialist city council member in Minneapolis's modern history.

"I think they really thought that we would be too distracted [with the election] to respond," said Nick Espinosa, an Occupy Homes activist.

A public information officer for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Jennifer Johnson, told HuffPost in an email that the department "does not wish to comment on your inquiry involving an eviction."

Representatives of a management company working for Kelly's lender, Freddie Mac, arrived with the sheriff's deputies and placed new locks on the home's front door. Kelly said after her daughter was released from handcuffs and the sheriff's deputies left, she was able to contact Occupy Homes supporters. They entered the house through a side door and persuaded the management company to leave.

"We basically outmaneuvered them and went in the side door of the house and filled the room with people," said Espinosa.

Kelly says she was the victim of a predatory loan and at this point has paid $425,000 for a home now worth $81,000. Freddie Mac, which gave her the loan through servicer JPMorgan Chase, said she has not made a payment on the house since the spring of 2011.

"We are now pursuing again under law our remedies to acquire the property and sell it to mitigate our losses, which have accumulated over the years," said Freddie Mac spokesman Brad German. "I have no idea about any connection between her candidacy, her election date and our exercise of our legal rights, post-foreclosure, post-redemption period to acquire the property."

Kelly said a sheriff's writ posted on her door between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday warned her that she had 24 hours to vacate the house. But she didn't leave. "I intend to stay in the home," she said. "For God's sakes, I've paid for it five times over."

Kelly said the eviction attempt has only fueled the public discussion her candidacy was meant to generate. She said she went to the polls Tuesday and ran into voters who had already heard the story. Their response convinced her to rethink her candidacy.

"I wasn't going to vote for myself," she said, "but I decided if other people were going to, I probably should."

“If JPMorgan Chase and Freddie Mac think they can stop us with an illegal 5 am raid on Election Day, they are mistaken,” said Jaymie Kelly. “I feel like I’ve been violated, for them to come in the middle of the night and break down a glass door. They took my daughter out of bed and handcuffed her. They are threatened by Ty because he has plans for changing how the city operates by keeping homeowners in their homes and not using public resources to illegally evict homeowners. This is voter suppression at the highest corporate levels. But their illegal, politically calculated actions are only fueling our movement. We are going to win my home and Ty’s election.”

(from last night)

http://www.occupyhomesmn.org/eviction_notice_posted_at_jaymie_s_on_eve_of_historic_election

Jaymie Kelly received a 24 hour eviction notice today. Sheriffs can evict anytime before November 22nd, the weekend before Thanksgiving, throwing her out of the Powderhorn Park community she’s lived in her whole life. As the community prepares an eviction defense, tomorrow Jaymie and her neighbors will participate in a historic local election, which could see Ty Moore, a Socialist Alternative candidate endorsed by Occupy Homes MN, elected to City Council.

This news is disturbing because Jaymie is technically in negotiations with her lender, JPMorgan Chase. “It’s almost like Freddie Mac planned it,” says Jaymie Kelly. “Ty Moore stood with me and Occupy Homes MN from the beginning. Now, when we’re so close to having a candidate who clearly challenges Wall Street, as corporate PACs like the National Association of Realtors (NAR) pour thousands into the race, the sheriffs may try to move in before we even have a chance to pass policy that would help.”

The NAR spent approximately $12,000 in mailers and robocalls to skew our local election against Ty Moore, and are currently suing the city of Richmond, CA to halt their use of eminent domain to give relief to underwater homeowners.

Jaymie Kelly has paid $425,000 for her home of 30 years, currently valued at $81,000. JP Morgan Chase and Freddie Mac are in contact with Jaymie, saying they’ll reach a decision on her case by November 9th. Freddie Mac’s lawyers refiled the writ after 150 community members thwarted an eviction on October 8th. Now they are dual tracking Jaymie with an eviction while she’s negotiating with Chase.

“I’m asking my supporters to help fill shifts to defend my home, I’m asking our elected officials to stand for the people instead of the banks,” said Kelly. “I’m asking my neighbors to volunteer and vote for Ty Moore for real systemic change, not just lip service to the needs of struggling homeowners.”

Tomorrow we’re going to show that the power of people is stronger than corporate interests and that when we fight, we win.
