2. The Republican base turns out every election.

Ours shows up every four years.

A halfways decent Republican would have won. Then again, a compelling Democrat would have probably won bigger tonight.

4. No one will know what happened in VA for at least a few days if not more.

However, since I'm three glasses of wine into the night, I'll make an uneducated guess based on what I posted two days ago.

My guess is that the VA election had almost nothing to do with the national scene and everything to do with Democratic voter complacency due to the massive lead McAuliffe had in most polls as well as many Democrats really not liking what they believe McAuliffe stands for - third way, corporate interest politics.

I think it's notable that the Libertarian candidate did so well and that exit polls apparently show a larger than usual number of young voters going that way. As a returning law student, I've been surprised at how many of my younger classmates call themselves Libertarians. When asked why, the usual answer is that they believe government has failed them so they want it to stop wasting their money. In other words, they think they have a better chance going it alone than with the help of the government. Yes, it's ignorant, but that's the usual response.

We will hear plenty of analysis but I suspect that many just stayed home or voted for the third party candidate.

In blogs and on message boards. Hopefully those people learn it is not cool to trash Dem nominees with lies and innuendo in the days and weeks leading up to a general election.

near the end.

I'm willing to consider that McAuliffe did something different near the end when he was confident that he was going to win.
