(45,529 posts)The recount only confirms the precinct totals, don't expect it to change much.

(17,469 posts)The DNC should fight this tooth and nail.

(45,529 posts)only changed about 24 votes. VA doesn't recount everything, they just re-certify the totals for each area.
The absentee ballots (especially in Norfolk and Fairfax) should favor us, so the is hope.

(17,469 posts)Locales with TS voting systems (no physical ballot) are a problem since all they do to recount is check the same total that could be completely wrong. All the more reason to fight for OpScan.

(17,469 posts)In NC we changed the law to require random audits of paper ballots and paper audit logs of TS systems. If there is a discrepancy, paper beats electrons, unless fraud can be shown on the paper count.

(10,942 posts)I would guess that provisional ballots would favor the Democrat given active voter suppression happening in Virginia. Folks, we fucking see it again. If any person that was put out by Virginia republican assaults on personal freedom for the last four years didn't vote, they may get the AG they deserve. Fortunately the two top spots are owned by Democrats and hopefully the Virginia assembly is less red, because Virginians will need that is the republican wins the AG seat. Expect republicans to go to court in an attempt to prevent provisional ballots from being counted.

Given the number of voters recently struck from the rolls, I suspect the provisional ballots will favor Dem candidates. DUers with RL or Facebook friends in Virginia might want to remind people that provisional voting's not done until you follow up with proof of ID and it has to be there by Friday.

(29,280 posts)We need to do a better job of emphasizing the importance of a full-ticket vote in our GOTV efforts.
Plus here in NoVA (highest dem population in the state) I kept telling folks who took only a dem sample ballot (many people take both a rep and dem sample ballot) to call their friends because it was going to be close. It stumps me why this isn't part of the instruction we give to everyone who volunteers to hand out out our sample ballots, it's so simple.

(38,487 posts)MCauliffe overcame the evil NRA for a great victory. Flipped a governor to our side. Surely a bad day for republicans

(1,991 posts)it was a repudiation of the teabaggers, we won both the VA. Governor and Lt. Governor's office, I was hoping for a clean sweep with the winning of the AG, but now, not so sure.
All in all though, a great day for us.

(10,500 posts)I think the race is still leaning to Obershain. We will need the provisional ballots to win.

(101,368 posts)Is it provisional votes somewhere? Looking at the spreadsheet from that site, I've looked at about 10 counties so far, and they've had 1 or 2 provisional votes at most in each. Are they correcting earlier mistakes? Absentee votes being added? (I looked earlier, and all the counties I saw had significant numbers already, though I didn't save what they were).

In a recount, all paper ballots are counted by hand. Printouts from touch-screen machines are reviewed and checked against the certified totals. If the printouts aren't clear, or if the court asks, officials can rerun the printout or examine the counters in the machine.
Optical scan ballots are re-run through a tabulator, and any that can't be read are hand counted. Ballots where people voted for too many candidates or where they didn't vote for any candidate aren't counted.
The recount does not consider challenges to a voter's eligibility and does not consider absentee or provisional ballots the electoral board ruled were invalid.
