Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDid Dems win in your state yesterday?? PLEASE CHECK IN!! Tell us where & who!!
I'll go first! I live in St. Petersburg, Florida. Our incumbent Republican mayor lost(!!!) and ALL of our city council seats were won by Democrats!!
DEMS swept our local elections!!
Winners:
Rick Kriseman (D) - Mayor
Karl Nurse (D) - City Council
Darden Rice (D) - City Council
Jim Kennedy (D) - City Council
Amy Foster (D) - City Council
We're hearing a lot about the big, gubernatorial races, however I'm curious if Dems winning local races yesterday is a nationwide trend, so rather than googling all 50 states I thought I'd just ask my fellow DUers. So please post the details:
1. Tell us your City/State
2. Whether Dems swept your elections (or only won a few)
3. Tell us who won what
3. Any other interesting details... like if you live in a heavily Republican county/state, who was defeated, whether long-time incumbent lost their election, etc.
I'm hoping there are lots more out there!!

(2,795 posts)The current BOE members (conservative baggers) brought political contributions in the amount of $1.5mil from Americans for Prosperity and good old Jeb Bush. Our candidates were outspent 3 to1.
Can you believe that shit? This is a county of 285,000 people and the Kochs came meddling with a million dollars to make sure they could continue on the path that our school district is on, to privatize the school system in this county.
But I am really glad to hear all of the dems around the nation being elected
ETA: I double checked and am unable to source the $1.5mil. The grassroots group is saying $1.5mil but I am only finding documented $350,000 from the Kochs. Even at that - $350,000 out of state money for a BOE election in a county of 285,000 is still

(2,795 posts)There are this same ilk of "reformers" in the Denver Public School district. Kochs, among others, were contributing to that election this time around too.
I remember David Sirota's wife ran for BOE in the Denver Public School district and he talked about the outside money that came flowing in for the conservative candidates and out spent her campaign 2:1.
ALEC is very instrumental in what these school boards are doing in a few select counties. My county is as blood red as they come so their money was well spent here. Got them exactly what they were going for

(3,117 posts)But I don't have the names of the groups or dollar amounts. All I know is I was receiving 3-6 negative flyers per week against the Democrat running for mayor here that weren't from the Republican party or the R candidate's campaign. One day I received 3 on the same day! But thankfully it didn't make a difference. The Democrat won with a larger margin than expected.

(2,795 posts)fed, state and local races. Imagine if they did that on a philanthropic level - donating to build new schools or grant money for medical or climate research. Imagine using that money for the good of the people instead of the good of themselves. So much money that could have done so much good but has only done so, so much bad

(3,117 posts)How incredibly greedy and selfish they are. How perverted that they also keep a high profile as *philanthropists* and patrons of the arts.

(26,295 posts)Phil won with 63% of the vote. We've had a lot of shifting in the 49th District - Phil is filling the seat vacated when Jim Ananich won the State Senate seat vacated by another Democrat, who moved on to the County Clerk position - WHEW! But, the important thing is, we kept this seat firmly on the Democratic side of the House. This is a pretty solid Democratic district.
I'm pretty tickled because I worked with Phil on the Kerry Campaign.
So, Congrats to Phil!!
That's GREAT news.

(65,616 posts)We must be positive going into 2014! All the Doug and Debby Downers on DU are trying to suck the positive from last night out of the air and we should not allow it!
WE WON!!! HELLO OUT THERE! WE WON!!!

(3,117 posts)I heard some CNN bimbo asking David Axelrod about McAuliffe's margin of victory being less than expected and whether it wasn't a sign that Democrats should be worried. Axelrod said (something like this):
"We've got a Democrat in the governor's mansion now and where I come from we call that a WIN!!"

(65,616 posts)You can ALWAYS depend on the Mainstream Media to represent the 1% in this country. The political bias against Dems is at an all time high imo. It is almost as if the M$M wished IT could decide elections and not US.

(7,720 posts)St. Paul's mayor is a long-time incumbant. The Minneapolis seat was wide open and there were 35 candidates on the ballot. I don't actually live in either city, but they both used Instant Run Off voting. The fee to file in Minneapolis was only $20, so that's why there were so many candidates. There was exactly zero chance of any candidate other than a Democrat of winning either race. I'm not a fan of Instant Run Off voting. They're still counting ballots in Minneapolis.
AmBlue
(3,117 posts)Or a Republican that lost to a Dem? I'm not a fan of instant run-off either, btw.

(20,176 posts)MD has few towns/cities, most of the state is run on county-wide basis.
There's no danger of Takoma Park, Rockville or Gaithersberg electing a GOP mayor so I can safely assume there were no GOP wins in my area.
