CBSNews must explain relationship bet Logan's Benghazi source & CBS-owned partisan book publisher whose editor-in-chief is Mary Matalin.@CBSNews in NYT doesn't explain how Logan spent a year reporting a hoax, or why 60 Mins partnered w/ GOP publisher. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/09/business/media/cbs-correspondent-apologizes-for-report-on-benghazi-attack.html?hp

How cld Lara Logan be "misled" (her word) for the full year she told the Times she reported on the story? http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/11/06/business/media/cbs-news-defends-its-60-minutes-benghazi-report.html?from=business.media
Logan claimed to spend a yr on this hoax & that leaving out source's link to Corsi-Rove publisher mere "oversight" http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/11/06/business/media/cbs-news-defends-its-60-minutes-benghazi-report.html?from=business.media

Logan even called for retribution for the recent terrorist killings of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other officials. The event is a harbinger of our vulnerability, she said. Logan hopes that America will exact revenge and let the world know that the United States will not be attacked on its own soil. That its ambassadors will not be murdered, and that the United States will not stand by and do nothing about it.

(29,503 posts)at Presidential briefings and press conference, at the transparent way the press corps would flatter and fawn to GWB, throwing softball after softball, laughing at his unfunny jokes, etc.
Logan's ideas about what it means to be a journalist were probably formed partially during those years, in meeting with others in the press corps, who would parrot the notion that, 'you have to do anything for access/to get the story'.
In that light, I suppose the sad state of Logan's reputation is kind of a mirror reflecting the state of American journalism, since what she did, does and will likely continue doing is simply journalistic standard-operating-procedure in the US. She will suffer no penalties, she will continue to cover stories for 60 Minutes, and CBS will move on.

(12,977 posts)A Politico story from 2009:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/25175.html
Mary Matalins official title at Threshold Editions is editor-in-chief, but the Republican strategist prefers several others: conservative, book-lover, fixer.
Its that last role where Matalins extensive network comes into play for Simon & Schusters 4-year-old conservative imprint, now slated to publish memoirs by both former Vice President Dick Cheney and Karl Rove. Matalins connections also played a part in a publishing-industry coup earlier this month, as Threshold simultaneously held the top spots on The New York Times best-seller list for hardcover and paperback nonfiction Mark Levins Liberty and Tyranny and Glenn Becks Common Sense, respectively. . . .
After the publication of Jerome Corsis The Obama Nation last August, liberal watchdog organization Media Matters described the book in a study as unfit for publication a play off the authors 2004 book, Unfit for Command, which riled Democrats and pushed the phrase swift-boating into the lexicon.
What the hell is Mary Matalin doing running a publishing imprint in the first place? asked Slates Timothy Noah, following the Media Matters report. She is a professional propagandist, a political operative who learned her craft at the feet not of Maxwell Perkins but of Lee Atwater.

(59,504 posts)Corsi's 2004 book "riled Democrats"? How about it smeared the Democratic nominee by distorting his sacrifice and honorable service record as a 25 year old? His reward for risking his very privileged life for his country was that he was smeared for being a real hero - all because the GOP knew that was something that gave him credibility.

(9,350 posts)I wonder how much her husband's business impacts her current view on the world. A few years ago, possibly before she married her current husband, Lara Logan seemed to have a different view on the world. It seems before her current marriage she was not calling for war all the time. Now that she is married to a defense contractor she seems to want more war. I would like to know if her husband would have benefitted financially if there had been an American military retaliation against the Libyan rebels who attacked the U.S. embassy in Libya. It may be that Logan pushed this story knowing that if military action occurred her husband would profit.

(1,428 posts)With the end of the Fairness Doctrine broadcasters answer to no one but their corporate bosses. There is a solution. Like religion make news media tax exempt.
Any organization that gathers and disseminates public affair news and/or opinion should be tax exempt as long as they devote 15% of their content to outside review/rebuttal and they have no other business interests outside of public affairs news.
A simple solution that would work.
