John Edwards Starts New Law Practice

The Huffington Post | By Luke Johnson
Posted: 11/19/2013 8:30 am EST

Former Democratic senator and 2004 vice-presidential nominee John Edwards announced Tuesday that he had formed a new law firm with a former partner, David Kirby, and his daughter Cate.

The firm, Edwards Kirby, will focus on public interest cases involving "social, economic and individual injustices" and have offices in Raleigh, N.C., and Washington.

“It is a privilege to practice again, and we want to take on cases that, through litigation, change social inequalities in favor of the greater good,” Edwards said in a statement. “In building Edwards Kirby, we sought a team that has championed the causes of economic and social equality in court and in hundreds of communities across the country.”

The announcement is Edwards' first major move since a campaign finance case against him ended in a mistrial on May 2012. The case centered around whether Edwards used campaign funds to hide his then-pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, during his failed 2008 presidential run.

He's so slick he had me supporting him for the Presidency when he ran. I actually believed he'd be good for the country. I see how he became such a wealthy lawyer to begin with.

6. Same here. He knew how to pull at the heartstrings of the working class, that's for certain.

I don't agree with how he handled his wife's illness, but it appears he still has the admiration of his kids, much unlike Gouliani.

5. One wonders is whether a jury woiuld be predisposed to NOT believe him

When he was a lawyer, his strongest asset was his ability to speak to the jury and have them trust his view of what happened.

It will be interesting to see whether he can still get people to trust in the case he is making.

Sadly, it might be that his daughter or partner may have to be the lawyers actually trying the cases.

He's just a slimeball. What he did to his wife is unconsciounable.

Note: This post was a response to the original version of #7. The author of #7 has since retracted the sweeping generalization that I was answering. Thank you, Vashta Nerada, for that all-too-rare ability to admit error.

I spent most of today writing court papers on behalf of a construction worker. He and his foreman both told the site supervisor that the job they were supposed to do required use of a safety lift. But the lift wasn't available right then, and the supervisor wanted the work to go forward chop-chop, so he ordered them to use a ladder instead. The ensuing accident left my client seriously injured; he can never return to construction work. So far he's received only the Workers' Comp pittance -- nothing from the greedhead company that caused his injury.

I read your post only after I'd spent the day trying to get him fair compensation. If I had known that by doing that, I was being a slimeball, I suppose I could have gone to the movies instead.

And, not to defend Edwards's conduct in his marriage, but that's not the whole story of his life. In between bouts of infidelity and deceit, he also helped a lot of people who, without him, would have been shafted by the system.

13. And therefore ALL lawyers are slimeballs.

I note the irony of your avatar, attached to a post that stigmatizes a whole group of people. I kind of had the impression that such stereotyping was one of the main grievances of LGBT people.

I am very glad his daughter is working with him.

He's done some really shitty things but it's time to move on, for everyone.

There are plenty of politicians still struttin like proud roosters that have done shittier things and never owned up.

He was a good lawyer at one time working for the "little folks."

He let things go to his head and has ruined lives. But, he's no worse than many who have profited mightily off ruining lives these days and have profited and still have their jobs on Wall Street as heads of Investment Banks and Hedge Funds.

I wish him well in his efforts to rehab himself. I was a donor to his Senate Campaign...worked for him but left him when he refused to meet with Anti-Iraq Invasion Protestors here in NC and left us outside (refusing to speak to those of us there who'd donated and worked for him) to meet with the High Rollers who were pumping him for Presidential run.

So...many of us have bitterness. But, he's been through enough that hopefully he can turn it around and do the good he promised so long...long ago.
