Toronto mayor Rob Ford says he has given up alcohol

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he has given up alcohol after a "come to Jesus moment", as city councillors all but stripped him of power.

Mr Ford, 44, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that he was "finished" with drink.

Earlier, he vowed "outright war" on city councillors who had just voted to further limit his authority.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the allegations against Mr Ford were "troubling".

"You're done with alcohol now?" Mansbridge asked.

"Finished," Ford said.

I'll bet that pledge goes out the window by noon. He needs some serious inpatient help or he's going to die.

no mention of rehab, though. I predict failure on that promise within days.

Let's see how long this lasts. I've witnessed alcoholics who just stopped cold and never picked up another drink. Then I've seen many who readily relapse after a little while.

I think Canada has just gotten their version of Rush LImbaugh. Kinda spooky.
