(546 posts)I lived in the very upscale urban neighborhood for a while.
The garbage in the area was a treasure-trove of household items, clothes and furniture.
One of my friends furnished a good deal of his apartment with items found in the trash and kept a large collection of coats, pants and other clothing items that he would give away to people in need.
On garbage day it was common to see people going through the trash, like it was a tag sale.
-------
Many people living in the area were incensed over the fact that poor and homeless people were taking items from the trash and using them for their own purposes. They complained bitterly that people from somewhere else were going through trash were taking things away, almost as if they were being robbed.
The trash-pickers were making a big mess out there
leaving piles of refuse all over the place
totally irresponsible
taking things that did not belong to them.
My rich neighbors, the trash creators, hated that.

(2,016 posts)Today is trash day, and while going out to the garage, a lady pulled up to my trash bins to forage for recyclables.
She looked at me and smiled, and in broken English stated "This is for food. I pay for food."
I smiled back and said "Vaya con Dios, Senora."
If people need it, take it, I say. It costs more for me in gas to travel to the recycle center than to turn in my bottles.

(18,641 posts)Such is the stupidity of common sense republicans.
I always joked with friends that my final plan, if all else fails, is that I would sell my meager possessions and buy a one-way ticket to Hawaii. I planned to get off the plane and ask where the nearest welfare department is. Why would I want to be homeless in Youngstown?
Of course it's a joke, but few consider that the island paradise has the same social problems and benefits as the other 49 states. Apparently, at least one person is working to change that through hate and prejudice.

(33,398 posts)And some people chose Oahu. Now they're stranded in an unaffordable paradise.
Hawaii's legislature recently allocated several hundred thousand dollars to buy their homeless one-way tickets out of Hawaii.

Nevada has been buying their homeless one-way tickets to the PNW because Portland and Seattle have services.
A national game of Homeless Hot Potato.

(18,641 posts)...that a good many of these homeless are natives whose heritage goes back generations, or even into antiquity. How does anyone tell them to go back where they came from, or to leave the home of their ancestors?
It's like sending Hispanics to Mexico even if their families were in Texas before it became a state, though I'm sure that's been suggested as well.
It's good this dumbass state senator isn't on the committee for Native American Affairs.

(33,398 posts)It's people from the mainland who are stranded - presumably those foolish enough to think it was a wise move to fly there on a one-way ticket to live on the beach.
The Homeless Crisis brings out the worst in people - it brings out the worst in me, that's for sure.
