Sir Nicholas Winton organized the rescue and passage to Britain of about 669 mostly Jewish Czechoslovakian children destined for the Nazi death camps before World War II in an operation known as the Czech Kindertransport.
After the war, Nicholas Winton didnt tell anyone, not even his wife Grete about his wartime rescue efforts. In 1988, a half century later, Grete found a scrapbook from 1939 in their attic, with all the childrens photos, a complete list of names, a few letters from parents of the children to Winton and other documents. She finally learned the whole story.
In the video below, the survivors gathered to give him a wonderful surprise:

I shouldn't have clicked on that link.
There's a piece of dust in my eye.
On a lighter note, my dog goes bananas (whimpers) when I leave him for just 8 hours. I can't imagine what he'd do to me if I left him for 8 months.
Django loves me.

(44 posts)God has definitely blessed the world with this man. God placed him in the right place at the right time to save all of these wonderful children. This is a man that we all could learn from. His heart and his love made possible the dreams of these children to have a chance.

(22,271 posts)but you can't for a minute tell me that there aren't angels walking among us. Most of them are just like this one -- quietly doing their work, helping so many, without fanfare and mostly without recognition.

(2,517 posts)What a feat from a brave man to have cared so much and selflessly given his time and effort to save so many other Mom's and Dad's children.
A true citizen of the world and hero.
God speed to his effort, memory and the love that he showed those children.
I can only hope that I would have the courage to do the same were I in his shoes, or if unable to act, that someone else would care enough to do the same for my children and give them a future.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

(39,405 posts)so they can use it as a shield against criticism of their business practices, and even average people might be tempted to brag of their good deeds, but this guy embodies the principle of a Bible verse that says, "When you give to the poor, don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing." In other words, don't broadcast it.

It'd be interesting to hear more of their later lives.

(18,672 posts)If we ever doubt that one person can change lives, this video would refute that. What a beautiful man. If there ever was a crown in heaven, he would be the one to deserve it.
I have no doubt that my fellow DUers and many more are just like this man. This is why I think the human race is evolving, in spite of obvious set backs. This man was an anomaly for his place and time. I don't think this is the case anymore. We hear about the worst of humanity on the news, because that is what sells, but the best of humanity is still out there, working every day to ensure their fellow human beings don't suffer. We have a long way to go, but look at how far we've come.
