Ok... time for a dumb question.

What is this "I will never apologize for being American" phrase.

I know in a literal sense what it means. I just don't get the hidden message in it... or maybe I think I know... etc, etc... I do feel it will be something childish. I hope you understand where this is going. Who is asking for apologies?

Since he has apologized a few times, they think he bows to everyone. They are trying to make him look weak.

I mean fuck all if a sitting president has to go around the world to apologize for what a fucking disaster his predecessor left in his wake.

What is so bad about apologizing? To know when to apologize is to show strength of character.

bull shit, the idea that we are better then everyone else.
Maybe if you take out the fact that we slaughtered the Native Americans when we came here, held blacks as slaves, have started several imperialist wars for profiteers, allow millions to live without food and shelter and then die without medical care, keep the average person in daily stress of paying bills, allow no future that does not enrich the 1% then yeah we are pretty good.

We should have looked into our collective souls (what FDR through LBJ did) after that monster raygun destroyed the back bone of this country and apologized to the world for that mistake once and for all and let it be the shame to this country as his Nazi beliefs are to Germany today.

When I think of the fact that bastard stole the 1980 election and where we could be if only President Carter was allowed to finish what he started...

denial or refusal to actually look at the histories of virtually every other nation on the planet with the same glasses we look at our own nation. Just for starters study up on the British empire sometime..no imperialism there...noooo

Cling to the idea of how special the country is... It's part and parcel of the imperial credo. Sometimes the language changes, see Spain and Portugal, or the Netherlands, did I mention Rome.

Hell, read Euripides's funeral oration...the theme is right there.

IOW, they know that America has done some bad things. Otherwise, they wouldn't preface it that way.

There are currently two visions for America.

"I will never apologize for being American" actually means "I will never apologize for my vision of America".

The "vision part" is initially left out because there isn't room for any other vision.

In other words, the phrase in question is "dog whistle" for "My way or the highway."

Goes hand in hand with ...

"Love it or leave it"

and

“You are either with us or against us.”
