Rush Limbaugh Scandal Proves Contagious for Talk Radio Advertisers

Ninety-eight major advertisers—including Ford and Geico—will no longer air spots on Premiere Networks’ ‘offensive’ programs. Insiders say the loss will rock right-wing talk radio.

Rush Limbaugh made the right-wing talk-radio industry, and he just might break it.

Because now the fallout from the “slut” slurs against Sandra Fluke is extending to the entire political shock-jock genre.

Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”

This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.

These right wing jocks have been doing that since their first day on the air.

What has changed is the way that we, the consumers, can get in touch with these advertisers. Social media and email has let us have a voice that they never heard before.

The advertisers have a target audience. That target is people with money. Whats the point of targeting "15 million" hate radio listeners if you are going to alienate the other 285+ million people in the US doing it.

....to undo the Communications Act of 96 (the bill Clinton signed into law) which allows owner to own multiple stations in a single market. I was so pissed when he signed that legislation. We could gain many progressive voices if there were several station owners(in a market) each programming something different. So I think we should (after the election) start lobbying Senators Sherrod Brown, Sanders, Boxer(my Senator), and Franken to propose undoing this horrible law. Just think of how wonderful it would be to hear a change on the air. I'll tell you all, this may be an opportunity for us people. Lets not F-it-up by sitting on our progressive asses doing nothing. Think of how it would affect the White House for the next four years. I'm telling ya, it could be an opening. Don't blink.

There needs also to be a limit on the total number of stations one company can own.

Easiest case: Clear Channel. They own (I looked this up) 850 radio stations. In Spokane, which is the closest Clear Channel city to me, they have six. (Since one broadcaster can own no more than a third of the stations in a market, six stations is probably an average Clear Channel footprint in any area.) If you told Clear Channel they could only own one station in Spokane, they could, and probably would, create five companies that work together in ways that won't raise the FCC's hackles, put each company in charge of one station per market, and still have one hell of a thing going.

I would say, no more than one each AM radio station, FM radio station, television station and newspaper in any one market and no more than 12 total "media outlets" per company.

The portly drug addict was their cash cow and his income went *POOF*. Advertisers are starting to realize the cost of buying time on hate radio is far more than what they were paying and just isn't worth it. The smart thing for Clearchannel to do would have been to drop the drug addict as soon as they saw the winds of change coming, but they are hooked on Limbaugh like crack. Remember when AM radio was full of talk shows that were useful? I remember shows like the consumer advocate where he would advise you on how to get a good deal on a car, or how to get a refund from a bad business deal. There were financial planners, and even sex therapists (Dr Ruth!). You can still get a garden show and a home handy-man show, but just on the weekends.

Somehow the righties got a hold of all the channels and turned them into nearly 24-7 propaganda stations.

I have sent my station email lamenting the loss of those old programs and complaining about the all-right-wing-politics-qll-the-time format. You should sent a similar email. Not only could we finally get rid of the hate-mongers, but we could get something interesting and useful.

For 30 years, I used to listen to Ralph Snodsmith do his Garden Show from 8am - 10am every Sunday morning on WOR 710 in NY. After he died a few years ago, he was replaced by an equally interesting garden host whose family had been in the business for 3 generations (Mark Viette).

And then suddenly last fall, WOR decided to take an hour of that away to put on Monkey boy (David Gregory) to simulcast Meet the Press.

If I wanted to watch Meet the Press, I'd turn on the damn TV. I don't give a crap about him. I want the Gardening shows!

I really really do miss the "over the back fence" local talk radio that the RW lunatics have hijacked. They dropped entire linelups because after they bought all these stations, they know that syndicating RW hate radio is cheaper than working out a contract with a local jock.

119. We have two main AM stations in Dubuque
Sun Mar 11, 2012, 03:46 PM
Mar 2012

We have two main AM stations in Dubuque: KDTH and WDBQ-AM.

At one time many years WDBQ was a rock/oldies format. That was my station of choice because my very first car just had AM radio. (I didn't feel the need to upgrade because I wasn't big into music back then). And that was before the fat ass perverted drug addict got his hooks into the station. Over time it was bought out by Cumulus Media. In the early 90s Paul Hemmer jumped ship after over 20 years at the station and founded his own station. A number of the WDBQ on air staff followed him within a couple years. It sounds to me now like they all saw the writing on the wall and either got out or were pushed out then. Now in addition to Rush has Michael Smerconish, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Fred Thompson. I don't even have the station saved as a favorite on my car radio anymore, and I mainly have Sirius on most of the time.

KDTH however never got into the right wing talk model. It was owned by the Telegraph Herald before being purchased by Hemmer's radio group. It still has a full time news department, sports director, farm director and a staff of local personalities. They have a oldies / big band format along with some talk shows where they talk farming or other topics of local interest. I remember one time they talked about a group that set up a data center in a former US Government underground bunker. They have a trading post show where people call in Saturday mornings to buy or sell items. KDTH is now my parent's station of choice, it's on most mornings in the house and it's the one they listen to for the noon news.

He sicked up an incredible amount of his own sleaziness, just really let it all out, he was on a roll there.

In years past, he sounded like he was on the last stage of a drunken tantrum on most shows, even before he was found to be using hillybilly heroin. His listeners didn't catch on to his condition, didn't notice him slurring his speech.

If Conservatives ever want to be taken seriously again, they have to lay off the sex-driven attack machine. Actually learn to talk and work on solutions that work for everyone, not just their pals.

The reich-wing is probably trawling through his tapes as I write, looking for some quotes totake out of context in order to manufacture outrage againat him. The end result could have a chilling effect across the whole of news media, where everyone is so scared of controversy that the only thing they're allowed to talk about is Kardashians.

Let's use the momentum by contacting your local AM station and letting them know you are sick of the all-right-wing-all-the-time-political shows. They are unusually receptive to customer opinion right now. They know what you don't like. Now, let them know what you do want to hear.

Just Google your local AM station, click the "contact us" link and drop them a note. I want to hear a consumer advocate show, ask-the-lawyer legal line, and I really miss Dr Ruth Westheimer's sex and relationship show. I also miss the crazy, old Art Bell show (LOL- 'Call this line if you have had sex with an alien. Call this line if you area time traveller.')

According to the NY Times, it wasn't a lack of listenership that took down Air America. It was the lack of advertisers, who targeted Air America, who they deemed 'unpatriotic' and unsupportive of Bush's illegal wars. Now the war has shifted to a war on women, the largest consumer demographic, and they want no part of that, either. So this is actually great news for America, and really, really bad news for Rightwing Hate Radio.

That criteria eliminates right wing hate radio and Fox as propaganda spewing liars.

Very few mainstream liberal or progressive stations have a problem with this as I often hear corrections of things they incorrectly represented.

Finally, let's not underestimate the power of the women who have finally found their voice through various means including social networking and elected office. How many of these women and wives have simply stopped having any sexual relations with the dominating men who are legislating and grandstanding their individual rights away.

Do all these men really want babies? No more fun f*cking, I'm off birth control because of you and I CHOOSE not to be pregnant!

Sat Mar 10, 2012, 02:35 PM
Mar 2012

These companies are not really into pushing a public political agenda. What they do backstage is another matter and not relevant to this action.

For a long time they felt that they could fairly mindlessly toss ad money at anything with good ratings for their target demographic. Because of Rush being a catalyst, they are coming to understand that sponsoring certain content may really irritate a significant portion of their customers. Advertising only works marginally to drive sales. If part of that margin is lost to folks so angry that they "will never shop there again", the whole thing becomes at most waste of money, or perhaps worse yet, has a negative impact.

There are lots of options of places to run ads. There is a political battle royale shaping up. These guys simply do not want their products in the middle of the pending fracas. They probably would pull their money from left talk radio as well, if it really existed and they were sponsoring it. Since it largely doesn't and they aren't, no problem.

You're quite right about corporations alienating their potential consumer base. That is in quintescence, corporate suicide. I am old enough to remember (and sadly this tips my hand as to just how OLD I am) when the game systems Sega Genesis and Turbografix first appeared for sale on the US market. They both favored aggressive, in-your-face ad campaigns that jeered at the fans of other popular game systems at the time such as NES (Nintendo). I clearly recall that Sega's tag line was 'Are you one of us, or one of them?' Well, what they came to find out was that the 'them' (NES fans like myself) were already deeply entrenched in the US market. Nintendo had already established a large and loyal fanbase in the US by the time the other two systems came onto the market and their smear campaigns of NES fans turned out to be a bacchinal of professional throat-cutting. You hear very little from Sega these days and NOTHING from NEC-the parent company of Turbografix. I think NEC still continues to manufacture integrated circuits and such and Sega makes a few games but neither system is any longer a force to be reconned with in the game world. Now-history does indeed repeat itself and it would be wise for these financiers to learn from past mistakes lest they too take the same dark path to self oblivion.

Mar 2012

Hello DU! Greetings from Melbourne FL! I have lurked for many years and finally opened an account because this Limbaugh thing has me really furious (not that I wasn't already furious with him for trashing the national discourse).
On Sunday March 4, I posted a White House petition to FLUSH RUSH from Armed Forces Radio.
Why should Limbaugh have the opportunity to indoctrinate our young troopers as he’s done to so many of our friends and relatives? Why should our soldiers – while they’re on the job -- have to listen to this hatemonger denigrate their Commander-in-Chief? And Limbaugh does HATE everything, women in particular.
The petition has garnered just under 20,000+ signatures in just 6 days! It needs 25,000 total to have action taken. Would you kindly help out and sign? You do have to open an account at the White House petition site. Thanks and kindest regards. Solidarity.

RW radio is a huge propaganda/hate/lie machine. This is huge for the country.

One thing that happened recently in my area on the local Clear Channel station is that a local sports show was put in the slot right before Limbaugh. In my mind this is a big deal, though I don't think many around here really thought about it this way. It has been since before 911 that anything but some kind of hate talker was on during the day, with sports relegated to the evenings. Anything is better than hate talk, ANYTHING.

While there's been a fallout on the national level, I haven't seen it drop to the local level. When rushbo cites the 18,000 advertisers...he's "stretching" things (as usual) but not by much. He's refering to the 30 or so avails or :30 second commercial slots set aside for the 600 local affiliates to sell during or around the breaks in his show. I tuned into the Chicago affiliate and heard plenty of commercials during the local break including one for a business that promoted how they "supported Rush". Those dollars keep the local stations afloat who inturn pay fees to Premiere and rushbo gets a piece of that action. The 98 or whatever number of lost advertisers are for the avails that Premiere keeps for itself...and it is a big loss but not enough to force rushbo from the airwaves...his affiliates still are making their money.

Right wing hate radio is in its death throes...the People Meter system now used by Arbitron is not kind to those stations and rushbo's ratings are far less than what the "experts" had thought and they keep shrinking. Rushbo also faces a competitor in Mike Hucklenutz whose boasses, Cumulus, own some of rushbo's biggest stations (including WABC, WLS and KSFO)...methinks a lot of rushbo's game here is to draw a lot of attention in attempts to pump up the sagging ratings and force loyalty among his affiliates.

The very "deregulation" rushbo championed and made him filthy rich will be his undoing as Internet and satellite radio make AM and FM radio obsolete...
