It is a New Deal America ...

It is a Great Society America ...

It is a Progressive America ...

The only America they know of has had public schools and Social Security and a myriad of decent workplace rules with decent pay and a decent pension .... That history began to degrade during Reagan ....

I love shutting down the nonsense with some facts .... They have had no America except a Progressive America ...

(Unless they are over ninety years old ... and those times were NOT so good)

Right Wing Loonies have no idea what their own version of America would actually be like, though we all get little pieces of it whenever conservatives run government .... It is a rather unpleasant affair ....

Nobody wants that shit, but only half the electorate knows it ...

That is exactly what they mean. "My Country" is code for antebellum America. Sorry dudes, it's Gone With the Wind!

they are not likely to be plantation owners or own any slaves. More than likely, they would have more difficulty making a living. There wouldn't be any cars for transportation or any of the fancy standard of living we are accustomed to.

were just as poor (or almost as poor) as the black population. Hell, my own father and both grandfathers spent some time sharecropping which was the ULTIMATE in exploitation by rich landowners and they were all white. Yet because they had someone to look down on, they were kept content enough not to revolt.

The Rose colored glasses view of the past was great if you were well financed and white. Anything other than that it pretty much sucked.

That is what I tell them.

they destroyed it by twice electing George W Bush*. The changes that started in 2006, pressed further in 2008, stumbled a bit in 2010, but will continue and grow in 2012 were precipitated by a strong adverse reaction to Bush*.

Barack Obama was the strongest candidate in 2008 in considerable measure because he was the least like Bush* in every visual dimension. By this I mean far more than the obvious black/white bit. He was also more literate, well spoken, compassionate, liberal and generally elegant in his approach to things. The people got tired of government by fratboy and they elected someone who was decidedly not that.

The country was changed by Bush* in a large and relatively permanent way. Lots of analysis suggested that this change was coming due to changing demographics. However, most felt that the demographic change would not manifest in elections much before 2020. Bush* fatigue pushed the schedule up by a dozen years. Because this change is a bit demographically premature, it is shaky and depends heavily on the youngest voters showing at the polls in massive numbers. As time passes, they will no longer be the youngest voters and the change they want will become more concrete as they occupy a larger and predictable portion of the political landscape.

They uncorked the bottle and let this genie out early, now they want to shove it back in. Things don't work like that. The country they want "back" no longer exists, and you simply can't get there from here.

Ray the gimpy cop gets in Whoopie's face about his blackmail threat on her and she starts into a "Yes Masser" slave dialogue. I totally lose it every time I see that scene. They want the "white's rule" America back - you know, the one without toilet paper.
