Rush Limbaugh Scandal Proves Contagious for Talk-Radio Advertisers (Update:98 major sponsors banning

Ninety-eight major advertisers—including Ford and Geico—will no longer air spots on Premiere Networks’ ‘offensive’ programs. Insiders say the loss will rock right-wing talk radio.
--snip--

Rush Limbaugh made the right-wing talk-radio industry, and he just might break it.
--snip--
This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.

Valerie Geller, an industry insider and author of Beyond Powerful Radio, confirmed the trend. “I have talked with several reps who report that they're having conversations with their clients, who are asking not to be associated with specifically polarizing controversial hosts, particularly if those hosts are ‘mean-spirited.’ While most products and services offered on these shows have strong competitors, and enjoy purchasing the exposure that many of these shows and hosts can offer, they do not wish to be ‘tarred’ with the brush of anger, or endure customer anger, or, worse, product boycotts.”

I hope he and his radio show end up withering away out of the public and we never have to hear his voice again.

That is a very large blanket.

The influence of hate radio has taken a heavy toll. The time has long passed to stop feeding the beast.

not everyone who listens to radio is a rightwing republican. what ever any left wing radio show host has ever said pales in comparison to what rush and others have said.

Thom Hartmann discussed this the other day. He pointed out that when he was at Air America, he learned that there are corporate "blacklists" of networks or shows on which certain companies would not advertise. There were several that would not advertise on right-wing talk radio. Another list wouldn't advertise on left-wing talk radio. And, some would not advertise on talk radio at all. They just don't want to risk the potential for controversy. I wonder how much that "no-talk radio" list will grow because of this.

Thom's suggestion to all of this was, rather than call/boycott sponsors, one should call their local radio station and ask them to take the show off the air. Apparently, that's how the two stations that dropped Limbaugh made that decision. Boycotting or complaining to sponsors could backfire. They could just decide not to advertise on talk radio at all, which would hurt people like Thom, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes and Ed Schultz, who have many of the same sponsors Limbaugh had/has.

Just consumer activism forcing the public discussion to be more civil. As it should be.

The first step toward driving consensus and compromise. Political polarization is not a good place to be no matter what side of the isle you are on. After the GOP gets destroyed a few times, backlash will induce a cultural move toward civil, fact based political discussion. It won't take long for the GOP to learn that they must reinvent themselves and it must start by tossing their uneducated "spokesmen" on to the scrap heap. FOX will eventually be faced with a dilemna...adapt to the new reinvented party or die. Consumer activism has started the ball rolling in the right direction. We are not far away from seeing moderate Republican legislators again.

Consumer activism is proving to be a powerful tool when combating the plutocracy. Their over reaching days may be numbered. They may be forced to compromise. Considering their power, we must understand that every small gain is victory. You can't change 30 years of damage within one Presidential term.
