'Emo' Kids In Baghdad Are Being Targeted And Killed By The Dozen

The publication Al-Akhbar has also reported on the phenomenon, and the details are deeply disturbing:

- Religious extremists caught onto the interior ministry statement, and have been harassing and killing teenagers with "strange" or "emo" appearances.

- A group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led dozens of teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, according to activists.

- The armed men are said to belong to “one of the most extremist religious groups” in Iraq.

- “First they throw concrete blocks at the boy's arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead then, they start all over again,” one person who managed to escape told Al-Akhbar.

- Iraq's moral police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with such appearances, according to the interior ministry's statement.

Apparently kids with cell phones are no match for religious thugs with stones.

In this case, probably anyone who dresses and acts like a western teen, since fine distinctions among western musical and behavioral genre are likely lost on Islamic fundamentalists.

..much past our borders. I didn't imagine it to be the same as in America since it was such a random reason to execute children.

Has to do with costumes and dressing up to look like a vampire. Really silly stuff imo and a sad and pathetic commentary on Iraqi culture. Yet, when you let crazy people make the laws...you see kids get killed over their STYLE OF CLOTHING.

Emo involves taking teen angst and turning it into a lifestyle. It's got punk roots but is mainly about exalting your own sensitivity and/or depression. And unlike the Goth subculture, it isn't very creative in the way of costuming.

I'm pretty sure the Iraqis don't actually know diddly-squat about Emo but are just going after any young guys with long-ish hair.

Possibly they also discuss edgy ideas, but it's just fashion.

I hate fashion police! Fashion police are some of the most superficial people on the planet.

Emo is modern Goth, young people's response to the fact that they got left a darker, sadder world by their elders. If there is anywhere Emo is justified, it is the Middle East. Just like your Jaizzuz freeks here, the Imams will want to put a clmap dopwn on any Youth that question the myths. The only diofference is, Christians have no shame about coopting youth movements for their cause ("Christian rock&quot , so we will see what the Muslims do.

My bet: the muttawa are walking into the classrooms, designating anyone who doesn't look like a "normal" Iraqi as an emo, and killing them.
