they can't speak out against him or they will alienate Catholics. Even Sarah Palin was forced to apologize for saying the pope was acting liberal. Only one person, the unofficial head of the Republican party has attacked the pope, calling him a Marxist, Rushbo. Let's see if even he tones down the rhetoric. Republican heads truly are exploding, especially Catholic Republicans.

Catholic bashing by "real" Christians is pretty much accepted from what I remember. It has only been in the post FoxNews era that Catholics are grouped into the GOP as an acceptable demographic. Plenty of evangelicals don't like Catholics because they don't preach the Bible verbatim.

It is an interesting dynamic as the GOP needs Catholics in their base but they don't really like them. This is a dilemma for them but it seems they are ready to throw them under the bus if need be.

Red states aren't really very Catholic.

There is real, abiding dislike of Catholics among evangelical protestant Christians. Always has been. Many of America's founding religious groups fully intended America to be an officially Protestant land.
Then all the Catholics they had fled from in the old World poured in, too.

Amusing to a non-Christian such as myself.

in fact there are more xian varieties than there are ways to package meat by-products and call it bologna.

From my vantage point (having been "involved" with a nut-case fundamentalist) there are just as many caring Catholics (big C) as in the non-religious crowd. Most of the hatred and bile comes from the money-grubbing RW church-going-in-name-only bigots of the newer cults.

What I don't understand is how the Catholics and Protestants are letting these cultists usurp the good name and deeds that have been done over the years (well, quite a few ugly deeds, too.)

This Pope says the most sophomoric altruistic utterances and everyone goes all gooey and is AMAZED!

"We've never heard anything like this from the Vatican."

Too funny!

He has not uttered even the slightest disagreement with basic Catholic doctrine such as the all male priesthood, opposition to abortion and contraception, and opposition to gay marriage. Yes his smiley face might win over some people but I don'ttrust him.
