A holiday lesson: One young N.J. athlete's devotion to his sick mother

A holiday lesson: One young N.J. athlete's devotion to his sick mother

Hungry and alone, Vaida Jefferson lies in a cold, dark apartment, waiting for her son to come home.
She has barely moved in 11 hours. A rumpled purple comforter covers her frail, 100-pound body. Her rail-thin legs are folded and bunched toward her chest, stiff and stubborn.

The television, as it does so often, marks her countdown on this late October day.

"The Queen Latifah Show" in the morning.

The news at noon.

"Judge Alex" between 1 and 2.

And then, "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns.

At times, she stares out her second-floor window, gazing at the mountains stretching from Passaic County toward western Jersey. But now they have been swallowed by darkness, so Vaida knows her boy will be home soon.

At 6:43 p.m., she hears a key slide into the front door. A small smile crosses her face.

I've been a caregiver and can just imagine what that young man and his mother are going through. In the end, they will have given each other the greatest gift they can.

I wish him great success in whatever he undertakes to do. Bless his mother and may her dreams come true.

I get a message that there is some problem with the receiver's PayPal account being "restricted". Anyone know what this means and how to get around it? Especially if I can do it with out having to go through PayPal at all. (Even if I try to pay with my own credit card without using PayPal, I get that message.)

But having to care for an ill parent is just too much. Wouldn't it be nice if she could have a visiting nurse or caregiver to help? If she lived in a civilized country, her son wouldn't have to stay up until 3 in the morning and nearly kill himself to do it. We need real CARE--not insurance, care--desperately and we need it now.
