http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17311702Soldiers' lives are being put at risk by geotagged photos - marked with a location - on social media sites like Facebook, the US Army has warned.
It says Facebook's new Timeline feature, which creates a map of places geotagged by users, also poses a risk to soldiers and their families
Many smartphones automatically geotag photos with GPS co-ordinates.
In 2007 four US Army helicopters were destroyed in Iraq after geotagged photos were posted on the internet.

OP
That's exactly what I said when I heard they were implementing that. It's just wrong.

The biggest complaint was that spouses would be able to track their SO when they suspect cheating. I suspect said complaints came from said cheaters. In reality, it is the troops who face danger here. Granted, one would have to know the facebook username of a soldier to make use of the information, but how often are soldiers alone? How many profiles list their divisions? It wouldn't take much to track down an entire detachment. Last I heard, you still can't disable that feature. My Linux mini is in the bedroom. It doesn't have GPS, but I'm not at war.

All we're waiting for is the body count to get high enough. We sure as hell didn't need either one of them twenty years ago.
