And now for something completely different

Last edited Mon Dec 2, 2013, 07:15 PM - Edit history (1)

Sex is just another activity and a kind of silly one at that. Much like football, boxing and war. Yeah, you're free to engage in it but it's pretty unnecessary. Yes, we are out there and we find all these sex obsessed threads debating the legitimacy of porn against actual regular sex beside the point.

Have you considered that maybe the hyper-activity of sex in humans (and bonobos) by comparison to the other animals is similar to the traits of a lion's mane or a peacock's tail, artificially exaggerated by group selection? In other words, the obsession is totally of our own making over thousands of years but no more necessary than a peacock's extravagant and weighty tail. Consider the fact that for most other species in the animal kingdom sex is seasonal. We are the oddball on this one.

Maybe, just maybe, Sheldon Cooper's right and we're wrong.

That's all I wanted to say on that.

We humans, we're obsessed with ourselves. We need some other intelligent species to expand our frame of reference. These big brains give us math, science, art, culture, civilization itself, but they probably make us a bit weird. We get lost in ourselves, individually and collectively. We can only compare ourselves to life forms which can't tell us about themselves. I can hear these roaches in my apartment laughing at me, at us. They'll still be here when I'm gone.

I've no idea what I'm babbling about. We can think ourselves into all sorts of weird places, I guess.

Being a bear of minimal brain, myself, I often absorb ideas without remembering even having been exposed to them. The ideas slip out sideways, unexpectedly. They too often feel fully original to me. It's mystifying. Also, embarrassing.

Upon explaining this tendency to a relative, he a retired college professor, I was warned that I could be somehow guilty of plagiarism. My muddle-headed, osmotic mode of learning could lead to trouble! That I don't do this thing intentionally doesn't matter, according to him. That sort of freaked me out, yeah.

Which is the long way of noting that I love Neil DeGrasse "Doctor Awesome" Tyson to pieces. I've watched many, many of his talks. Surely I've ripped off many ideas from him.

That never would have dawned on me that the 1% difference in DNA translates into all that we have achieved that chimps haven't. That's a really intense realization.

But, yes, in your context I guess all the 1% that is not chimpanzees is us.

Good one!

However, think about how weird humans are sexually. We are increasingly engaging in activities that are not only weirder and weirder and seem not to have any survival advantage in engaging in them but seem to inhibit our survival.

So, really, who is doing sex wrong???

was looking for your feedback?

Or, if you are a mod, maybe he thinks my thread is incendiary in some way. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "stupid"? I would tend to agree with that so I'll edit my OP.

No explanation needed. It went right over my head at the time. I don't know why i failed to connect your user name with "Mr. dixie. at the time but i did. In any event, I didn't take it as critical, though I did edit my post to comply with my own standards and for some atrocious spelling. I have to pay more attention.
